The hunt will take place on the Prince of Wales Island based out of our Cabin in Hollis.

Your jet travel should be scheduled from your home to Seattle to Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines. Most hunters arrive in Ketchikan about 4 pm. To late to get over to the Island, unless you want to charter and airplane. Since the airport is on an Island across from Ketchikan it is usually about 5:30 pm before you get checked into a motel. There are several motels to choose from. The rates should be from $125 to $175. I will help you with all your arrangements.

Depending on my schedule ..... I might be able to meet you upon your arrival at the Ketchikan jet port. If I am at the Cabin my wife Fran will meet you and get you headed in the right direction.

The next day you have the choice to fly over to Prince of Wales or wait until the ferry sails at 3:30 pm. Flying is very weather dependent during October / November but the ferry usually runs. There are two flying options. Charter and aircraft or take a scheduled flight. Costs will vary and we can talk about that. The Ferry ticket will be about $45 one way. These costs are up to you.

You will be guided by Registered Guide Johnnie Laird. Johnnie has lived and hunted on POW Island since 1980. He received his license as an assistant hunting guide in 1988 and obtained a US Coast Guard Master (25 tons) License in 1994. Muskeg Excursions went into the big game hunting business full time in 1995.

Depending on your return reservations you will need at least a 10 or 11 day jet spread.

Muskeg Excursions works under a Priority Use Permit on the Tongass National Forest, Craig and Misty Fjords Ranger Districts.

We will schedule this for 7 days of hunting. Extra days can possibly be arranged.

Physical as well as mental preparedness is very important especially on this late season hunt. There will be weather with out a doubt.

The Bucks will have very nice winter hair and thick necks. We hunt the bucks in the mountains, muskegs and on the beaches depending on the weather and snow level. The Bucks readily come into the call in Southeast Alaska during the 'RUT'.

We have hunted this area over the years and are very familiar with it. A B&C quality Sitka is very possible. We have taken some real nice Bucks on these 'RUT' hunts.

We usually get some Crabbing in and sometimes do some salt water bottom fishing. There could be a few late run Coho in the river.

We will have a cook at the Cabin and do eat well.

The rate is $4500 for a single hunter. The rate for 2 hunters x 1 guide is $3750 each ...

These rates a based on one Deer ... additional Deer can be taken for a fee of $1000 charged upon success.

Good rainwear is a must and Gore-Tex lined mountain hunting boots will be needed also.

Extra Costs ....

Extra costs will be license and tags, non-resident hunting license fees are $85, Sitka Blacktail tags are $150 each. I am a vendor and have all necessary licenses and tags on hand.

Travel costs between Ketchikan and Prince of Wales island.

Room and board while in Ketchikan before and after the hunt. Sitka Blacktail at its best. .......

If this sounds like the hunt your looking for give me a call at 907 225-9513 or drop me an email at jlaird@kpunet.net

Free bump just for making my mouth water. I did a November boat-based hunt on Montague for blacktail and would hunt those little deer again just for their meat - I swear I didn't even need a knife. It was the best game meat I've ever tasted. Too bad I'm saving for Africa right now.

Offer any shore-based sea ducks on these hunts? I shot a gorgeous Harlequin on my hunt, double-banded no less, and passed on many others.

yep ... we usually get in some duck hunting for both puddle and sea ducks when the hunter wants that action.

But 'little' Deer ... POW Island has some nice bucks. This one Jason took last late Oct.

Just thought I would post another pic or two from the '09 'rut' season.

And also let you know I have booked the November 10th hunt .... that still leaves some good hunt slots available.

If you didn't draw that lower 48 tag you were hoping for or if you need A Sitka Blacktail for your North American Deer slam. Or just want to come up and have a great hunt and take home some of the best wild game meat there is.

I still have late Oct or Early November or the pre-Thanksgiving slots available.

All good hunts.

Johnnie puts on an excellent hunt you will not be disappointed with. I hunted late Sitkas with him on POW Island and had a very rewarding experience.
