Tony Lee/Westwind Guide Service has had a cancellation on a brown bear/moose combo of 16 full hunting days 5-20 Sept'13. The hunt will be conducted in Unit 17 where I lived for 22 years and in Unit 19. Hunt will allow 2 brown bears and 1 each moose, black bear, wolf and wolverine.

Bears are just abundant with a limit of two per hunter resident or not. Bears will average 8.5'-9'+. Moose are in good numbers with bulls over the last few years averaging 60"+ with someone taking a 70" about every year.

The moose hunt is scheduled during the rut when the bulls will respond to a call readily. Bears will be on the berries and very visible on the open hillside. Everyone should have one or more shooting opportunities on a big moose and/or a nice brown bear or two.

This is a great hunt in an area I know intimately with a longtime Alaska operator and the price is excellent. $18,500 would be a very fair price for the bears only on a 10 day schedule let alone 16 days to include a moose etc.

Are the bear classified as Brown or Grizzly Bear?

Do you need to buy 2 Brown Bear tags in order to shoot two and do you pay for the tags up-front or after the harvest.

What is the terrain like and is a tent camp?

1x1 hunt? Any other hunter's in camp? Will the hunter be the first in the area during the season?

These are brown bears. Actually in a straight line the hunt is not that far from the coast.

You need to buy a moose and a bear tag up front but you can buy the second bear tag in camp once you've taken the first bear.

Terrain is quite open with tundra, hills and alder plus willow thickets. The camp is a tent camp with tents you can stand up in with cots for sleeping. No two men backpack tents.

Definitely a 1x1 hunt. There could be one other hunter in camp but this is a huge area so you will not be in each others way.

Bill it's most important to be there during the moose rut which starts almost like clockwork on 10 Sept and the season ends on 20 Sept so these dates 5-20 Sept are ideal. At most there would have been 1-2 bear hunters in camp before you as the moose season does not open until 5 Sept. At that time the bears are on the move from the salmon streams to the hills for berries so the previous hunters success has no effect on your hunt.

Tony Lee offers a nice hunt. I did a drop camp caribou hunt with him some years back, and was very impressed with his area. Lots of caribou, and we saw some good moose too. Of note, if you go be sure to purchase a wolverine tag. I saw 3 different wolverines in a week of hunting on my own. It's a easy 1 hour flight north of Iliamna by bush plane to his main camp.

Someone is going to get a real nice hunt.
