Anybody looking for NM antelope would be wise to do it soon. With the new management plan the herds are going to get hammered. Good luck Jim I hope you’re able to keep quality management on the larger ranches.

Thanks Southwesterner! Yes, the Commission just voted to screw up NM's program. Big Ranches will not be affected....they manage well. The commission increased the number of tags to the public and made all private land over the counter. I have no idea what this state is going to look like in 5 years but I can tell you the herd numbers are down from past years a great deal. No more 500 hd between Clines Corners and Roswell. No more 500 hd betwenn Springer and Clayton. Very few babies will survive this season due to the drought. Jim

It’s a shame they did that. Barbary and mule deer have been exploited and the herds paid the price. Barbs handle it better than the deer but it’s wrong when a guy with 1500 acres is selling 30+ tags a year because he wants/allowed to. Large ranchers that are already good stewards will continue to produce quality antelope. I think this is a final straw though for most of the public land/small ranch goats. Between predation and drought they are in bad enough shape already. Best of luck Managing the parcels you’ve got Jim.
