NEW BONGO AREA
A number of you have been following the self guided hunts I organize in Cameroun. I have just returned from a very successful prospection to a new area. I have managed to locate a zone that has a very healthy population of the magnificent bongo. I have been negotiating with the chief of the village to let me go in and try out the area for about 2 years. I finally got permission and we went in for an exploratory trip just this month. It was successful beyond my wildest dreams.
Although it is a 20 km. walk to get into the area, once there we found absolutely no signs of poaching. No snares and no hunter camps. We got into bongo almost immediately, but were able to put up only young or females from the herds the first few days. On day 8 we finally got a solitary male and were able to bring him to bay with our 2 dogs. All the initial tracking is done with the local hunters, who are very skilled at this. The dogs are only released at the last moment, making it a very enjoyable hunt. All of the hunt is conducted on foot from fly camps 20km. from the nearest road. I provide all the major camp equipment and all the support staff and transport. You bring your gun and personal equipment, or I can even loan a nice gun if needed.
I took the opportunity to build a number of blinds so that we could sit over some of the numerous salt licks found in the zone. I am planning on returning once the rains come back in July of this year. If anyone is interested they are welcome to contact or PM me.
Other animals in the area are forest buffalo, red river hogs, duikers, forest sitatunga, giant forest hogs, harnessed bushbuck and more.
Since I have never spent the time to learn how to post the photos here on-line the following link will take you to a photo of the bongo Chris shot just a week ago:
http://i304.photobucket.com/al...8/bongoChrisbest.jpg
Cost will be $15,000 if you come with me. This will cover everything except the trophy fees and costs associated with export of anything you harvest. If you want to do a self guided hunt it can be arranged for $10,000 all inclusive each for 2 people or $11,000 if you go alone. If you look up my posts or those about me you will see I have been doing this very successfully for a long time, but this is the first time I have what I consider a very good bongo area.
Trophy fees are as follows:

animal $ cost
Elephant * $ 4,000
Bongo * $ 3,500
Eland * $ 3,500
Buffalo * $ 1,800
Roan * $1600
waterbuck $ 800
hartebeest $ 500
bushbuck/reedbuck $ 300
red river or wart hog $ 300
giant forest hog $ 500
sitatunga $ 1000
Yellow back duiker
Temporarily blocked $ 500
peter & other duiker $ 300
Western cob $300
Oribi $300
* Denotes group 1 animal of which you are only allowed 2 on a hunt
Four other animals are allowed per hunter/year (Group 2) Only males may be shot. Six animals total.
PROTECTED: Leopard, pangolin, water chevrotain, chimps, gorillas, Colobus monkey, yellowback duiker
Wounded animals are charged at full rate. Females are charged at double (2X) rates.
I can be reached at cam.greig@yahoo.com. I live in California when not hunting and can have a letter reach me at: 11240 Page Mill Road Los Altos Hills, CA 94022
I will exhibiting at Dallas as well as Reno. I share a booth with Jim Shockey under the name Bombazi Wilderness.

What would self guided cost to take Red River hog and Giant Forest hog, and how long would you say one need? Would like to do this with bow.

You pose a most interesting set of questions; The giant forest hog is the hardest animal of the big game to find in Cameroun. I have shot numerous bongo and sitatunga but have seen the giant forest hog only once. Mind you I have been within 5 yards of them on numerous occasions but they are in very thick stuff. I know of one hill where they are numerous but there is not much other game there. I have shot only one.
On red river hogs that is easier and they can be baited if enough time is given to it.
Your problem here is that giant Forrest hogs are only a deep forest animal. The red river hogs are in most of Cameroun.
I would be glad to bait up some red river hogs for you in the one zone where my anti-poaching staff work. That way they can refresh bait on a regular basis. It is a LONG way from any giant forest hog though.
My typical hunts are 15 days with 11 days hunting. With pigs you can be lucky or unlucky and I would recommend the full hunt.
Cost is currently $9K all inclusive, which is a lot for a pig hunt. You would be put in blinds where roan, waterbuck, bushbuck, duikers and other game will come in though.
Give me your number and we can chat if you want more info.

Thanks Cam,

The idea is to bring a client with me. He is from Britian. We have done it before. He pays for the trip, we both go, he shoots the main trophies, and I shoot things that tickle my fancy like the pigs we are talking about here. I only bow hunt though. Maybe we can give the giant forest hog a crack with the bow??? Mentioning it to be so difficult just makes it more interesting to me now...... Wink

You are welcome to holler me on 078 444 7661. I do not know if you are in the States now or in S.A.?

Going all the way to Cameroon just to hunt two pigs??? Self guided?

You are a man after my own heart. I though that I was the only one interested in such trivial and silly things.

And you are going to do it with a bow....

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I took only one bow hunter so far and he did manage to take a red river hog with a bow.
Talk to your client and find out what tickles his fancy as I have spots all over Cameroun. The areas with giant forest hogs are 2 in number. One has only the forest elephant and the other is the new area for bongo. I would recommend the new bongo area. I saw giant forest hog tracks on the last trip and my client heard the pigs, so I know they are there. It is a 20km. walk in so there is no chance of baiting, as it is too far. We will call in duikers for you which is a kick with a bow and very doable.
I would have to charge you close to the regular rates as I have to pay all the fees for you if you hunt in any form. That is In the bongo area I pre-pay the village for a bongo before you leave to go into the forest, but so far it has been well worth it.
I could do this for $20K for the both of you. That is considerably less than a bongo hunt for one person in any other place where you have a very high chance at the animals.
I am in the States now and will be near East London the first two weeks of February. Let me know if this all sounds good and I will call.

I'll speak to the client. 20km hike into the jungle sounds like fun. He is 65, but very fit for his age.

I have a dream to kill every kind of wild or feral hog with the bow every where in the world, with my bow, before I die.

Might just as well start at home......

So far Bushpig, Warthog and Ferral down in S.A. As well as Wild Boar in Sweden.

Other African pigs and then to the States and South America.....

I will be bussy will I not... Wink

A very general statement, indeed, but I found the people of Cameroon (whether it was the porters or folks in the service industry that we came into contact with) to be very friendly and polite. The first time I got in my hammock and it flipped over and I did a face plant .. no impression at all that they were making fun of the Clown From Canada ..When I did it a second time they just came and tied down the hammock.... Along with that, however, were the lowlife folk in the airport in uniforms that demanded (openly) bribes . It was all good .. tu2 I'd go again, for sure.
