This is a very interesting safari and one you will not find advertised elsewhere. I have been offered the unique opportunity to host a group to hunt the vast private Shiwa Ng'andu estate alongside owner and Professional Hunter Charles Harvey.

The venue is such that it would be ideally suited to couples that not only want to hunt but to delve into the fascinating history and culture of the “Africa House’.

After some discussion, Charles and I would recommend 8 persons that would be a mix of hunters and spouses or possibly two families? A variety of very desirable species will be on offer and the team will have sole rights to the estate during the safari.

Shiwa Ng’andu (the lake of Royal Crocodiles) is located in the Northernmost part of Zambia amongst the rolling granite hills that form the tail end of the Great Rift Valley, an area of unsurpassed natural beauty. The vast private estate combines this rich and varied history with a varied and pristine habitat that is home to over thirty species of game animals and over two hundred species of birds. The hunting area covers an area of twenty-two thousand acres of breathtaking terrain and boasts a large natural lake at its center, one of the largest privately-owned bodies of water in Africa. The same lake where David Livingstone lost his dog to a crocodile and it’s said that this is where he completed his final writing before his death.

The history and site are well documented in the link below. Note that hunting is not mentioned as an activity on this website.

https://www.shiwangandu.com/

The relaxed atmosphere and truly warm Zambian hospitality of all at the Shiwa Ng'andu Estate ensure that every guest feels truly at home and very much a part of the estate's incredible history and culture. Shiwa Ng'andu estate is without a doubt one of the most fascinating and unique destinations in Zambia.

My group hunts of the past have been extremely successful and enjoyable. There is a warm social atmosphere that has been encouraged by AR members and the hunting has been first class. Charles and I would like to conduct this hunt in the cool months of June or July but are open to suggestions. Note this is a plateau and does not experience the heat of the hot valleys.

In the past, we have asked hunters to nominate their priority animal and some lesser game animals from the list. We sort out the final mix in a group chat.

In addition to the group hunt, I have been offered the separate opportunity to hunt the indigenous populations of Sitatunga here and big game hunts in the Luangwa valley.

Due to the remote location, we would charter in and out and this cost will be shared. So consider a day's travel on either side of the safari.

10 days hunting @ $450 per hunter per day
Observers @ $250 per day
Family packages on request

Trophy Fees and species available:

Sable $6,500
Eland $4,500
Kudu $2,700
Kafue Lechwe $3,000
L. Hartebeest $1,700
B. Wildebeest $1,200
D. Waterbuck $1,500
Tsessebe $3,000
Reedbuck $1,200
Puku $1,200
Zebra $1,500
Bushbuck $1,000
Bush pig $700
Warthog $800

Group meet & greet, licensing, etc $1,000 to be shared by the group

Dip & pack $1,400 per family/person.

Accommodation outside of the safari approx. $100 per night bed & breakfast.

Arrival and return charter total $9,600 to be shared by the group.

Thanks Saaed, and I hope you and your family are enjoying the festive season.

This is an unusual one and twins history with hunting. I do my best to offer AR members affordable hunting in different locations in Zambia. The hunt will have a British flavor to it!

Wonderful place I hunted there a couple of years ago. The zebra do not have a shadow between the stripes.

My hunt report

Note; I was not trophy hunting. I did not bring back any trophies. IF I saw something I wanted to hunt size did not matter. I just wanted to stalk. Smiler

Very unique offer Andrew.

Those that are interested should read the book, The Africa House. It gives a good history about the house and Stewart Gore-Browne. As I recall, Gore-Browne was responsible for drawing the borders between Northern Rhodesia and Belgian Congo.

For history buffs, you are very close to the location that von Lettow Vorbeck ceased hostilities after he heard the Armiistice had been signed ending WWI. von Lettow Vorbeck was the last general with a standing army in the war. This could be an interesting day trip for some.

All the best on putting the hunt together.

I am definitely interested, Andrew. Key question is when the group hunt would take place. Would look for Tssessbe and L. Hartebeeste. Any bird hunting possibilities?

Best for the New Year, Tim

+1, the book by Christina Lamb is very good. Would have been a treat to visit Stewart Gore-Browne in the early years of the 20th century when the estate was completed.

Neat hunting opportunity with a fine historical connection.

Hi Tim,

Once I get the group together we will suggest dates to suit all.

Tentatively the Tsessebe and Hartebeest quota has been reserved for Miko and Tim Carney. I would have thought the Sable (5), Lechwe (10), and Eland (3) would have been the more desirable.

When it looks like we have a group then we can discuss dates that suit all. Cheers

I see an estimated return charter fee but no mention of the first charter. Can you clarify?

Mike

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Yes Mike this is a total for the flights. $4,800 each way for a Caravan. The Charter company can be paid by US$ wire if need be.

Janet and I would love to try this AR group hunt. She would enjoy the culture and history. Lechwe and sitatunga would be our preferred game animals as we have not taken either one. Thank you for the offer.

Looks like a fantastic hunt. Will there be other opportunities to hunt this property in the future?

Speaking of history, I heard rumor that there is a steam engine on this property that was used by the British navy to bring their two boats, Mimi and Toutou up to Lake Tanganyika during WWI, as written about in the fantastic book "Mimi and Toutou Go Forth".

Any idea if there is any truth in this?

Thanks, but a few more questions: 1. you mention accomodation outside of the safari of $100, is that before arrival Shiwa Ngandu? 2. Does the $450 daily fee include accomodation at Shiwa Ngandu? 3.Is the property fenced? 4.what gives this a British flavor - lived in Wales for 2 years but never hunted in the UK? 5. Not a question, the lounge and fireplace look very inviting.

I hunted Shiwa Ngunda a couple years ago. This family is interlinked it seems with British history - although Scottish. When I was there there were artifacts from the 11th and 12 the century if I am correct. I remember seeing a rifle and a dented helmet from the Afghan Wars in the 1800's. Some relative was one of the few survivors. I remember them talking (their were relatives there on my visit) about some relative making his fortune in tea. Being a yank of course I said: "It evidently wasn't Boston" Smiler

The last 100+ years Charlie's grandfather mapping borders for the empire in Africa. Building this great house in middle of nowhere - a 3 week journey from the nearest rail station; Charlie's grandfathers' influence in formation of Zambia. I think the last shots of World War One in Africa were fired 50 or 80 KM away. I am a mild history buff but it was wonderful! Charlie (blue-blood) although does not act it and his wife Jo are wonderful hosts. He has great stories as well as JO. Suggest reading the Africa House by Christina Lamb. We discussed WWI history in Africa; Colonel/General Vonborbecks grandson visited; a great time. Oh and very enjoyable hunting!

I hope to hunt there again someday. Just thinking of it gets me excited.

Andrew, I hope you don't mind me piping in?

Jim

The accommodation price is an average and there are some good venues not far from the airport. Absolutely the daily rates include accommodation. There is a partial fence along the communal/farming area. Both Charlie Harvey and I are British and Singleshot03 has answered the rest of your question.

Previous group hunts have been very successful and the participants made many new friends in the AR community. The safari tends to be more leisurely and social. Many of the inquiries have come from repeat clients who have proven to be the most wonderful people to have on safari.
