I've worked with Calvin Taylor/Center of the Nation Outfitters for about 8 years now and I've had some very happy clients with him. Cal only takes a few hunters every year and offers a very personalized experience guiding most of the hunts himself. Hunting is Cal's full time job as he hunts for USDA when he is not outfitting so you won't be dealing with a cowboy that has taken off a couple of days to do your hunt. Cal's hunts are all on private land that is managed to offer a good hunting experience and not high volume whack and stack. There is no shooting at running antelope at 300 yards on Cal's ranches. It's not necessary. An average shot will be at 100-200 yards on an undisturbed animal. The hunts based out of Gillette, WY are for antelope only and you will see literally 100's of antelope. You will have multiple shooting opportunities and should expect a good mature buck of about 14" with larger possible. I personally killed a 15" buck on this ranch. This hunt also allows 2 does at no additional cost other than the doe tags. This hunt works out nicely for 2-3 folks wanting to hunt together and share their expereince. The first group I had with Cal had taken 9 antelope by the end of the second day and were over the moon. Accommodations and food are included and provided in a new mobile camp or if you choose to stay in Gillete your hunt is discounted by $200. There are 4 slots left for this 3 day hunt and dates available from 1-15 Oct. The other ranch is at Kaycee, WY and is one of the most scenic places I've been in Wyoming. From the high point of the ranch you can see the location of the "Hole In The Wall" where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid between jobs. The country is broken with wooded hills, sage flats and a beautiful river runs through the ranch. Very nice! The river bottom is full of whitetails and some mule deer. You'll find the antelope on the flats. They will not be as numerous as in Gillette but the trophy quality can be better. Cal hunts one hunter or one party at a time here so you'd have the ranch to yourself for your hunt. When your there it feels like it's your own private hunting ranch. Accommodations are private and provided in a house on the property with all the amenities. Meals are taken with the Moffet family in their ranch house and Retha is a heck of a cook. Here if your patient 140-150 B&C is definitely possible for a whitetail, mule deer 160-170 B&C and antelope in the mid 70's B&C. 4 spots are open on this hunt also 15-31 Oct. All these hunts are on a draw and the application period has passed but since these are private land hunts surrounded by other private land there will be leftover tags. Last year there were over 900 unsold tags for the Gillete hunt area. These leftover tags will be available via the WY,G&F website starting July 1-10. Gillete antelope hunt: 3 days $2,450 with food/lodging 3 days $2,250 without food/lodging 5 day Kaycee deer/antelope combo $4,550 Hunt costs are all inclusive from airport pick up to drop off other than lic/tags. Deer lic $312 Antelope lic $272 Doe antelope $34 Below are a couple of good representative trophies from the '10 season. MARK H.
