We conduct Brown Bear, Black Bear & Mt Goat hunts on the mainland east of Ketchikan, Alaska in the Misty Fjords Wilderness area. Spring Black Bear ..... There are Black, Cinnamon and we have taken one Blue Bear in our area. You will be able to look over many Black / Cinnamon Bear during your 7 day hunt and be very selective. Some Bear will be rubbed but there will be new Bear showing up from the higher den areas every day. Our success on these prime time hunts is very high. You can expect to take a 61/2 to 71/2 foot Bear with a skull size of 18 to 21 inches. We have taken some over 21 inches in the past. Spring Brown Bear ..... I have one Brown Bear tag available for Spring '10. This hunt is scheduled for 12 hunt days. A Black Bear can be taken on this hunt. Even though we sight many Black Bear it is sometimes difficult to get on a Brown Bear. That is the reason I rate this hunt with a fee charged upon success of the Brown Bear. But lately we have taken 4 Brown Bear in the last 6 spring hunts. Our Brown Bear have been between 8 and 9 feet. Mainland / Misty Fjords ... What is your average goat horn length and your average black bear skull size? Can a goat hunt and black bear hunt be done either during the same time frame or back-to-back and at what cost? I will assume it would take place in the fall. I am thinking about booking a hunt like this for me and my 23yr old son in 2011 and a combo hunt would work best for us. Thanks. Woody

Woody ... Yes those hunts are in Fall. Goat season opens Aug 1 and Black Bear opens Sept 1. The combo hunt is possible in Sept and early Oct. I have never averaged Goat horn length over many years of taking Goats. We have hunted in my area of the Misty Fjords since 1995. We have taken some B&C class Billies during that time. During fall '09 we took 3 Goat hunters. All took Goats and 2 of those will score B&C. One has an official score of 52 and the other is still in the drying period but should score around 51. These were 10 inch / about 6 inch base / Goats and both were aged at 6 1/2 years old. Last season,'08, we took the Animal of the Year Award from the Ak Pro Hunters Assoc with a 51 2/8 Billy. Our area is well represented in the record books. Of course not all of our hunter have taken those jumbo Billies but the opportunity is certainly there. On the Combo hunt I charge $1500 for ea additional animal beyond the contract primary specie, charged on success. Hunting over the Goat carcass is sometimes possible and can be good for Black Bear, Wolf, Wolverine or even Brown Bear ($2000 success fee). Or Bear can be hunted, spot and stalk, while hunting Goats as they move from fish to the high mountain berries. Relocation to my cabin on Prince of Wales Island is possible after taking the Goat, if time permits. Some relocation costs do apply and those costs vary depending on relocation method used. Prince of Wales Island offers very good Black Bear hunting. SE AK is famous for it's rainy weather. That is one of the reasons we schedule our Goat hunts at 10 hunt days. Usually gives room for some weather days in there. It is a very physical back-pack style hunt. Johnnie

Thanks Johnnie. That was a very good explanation of the possibilities. I like the idea of a combo hunt. I am remembering back to the days when I was much younger reading about "mixed bag" hunts. I imagine that even those types can be arranged if a hunter and outfitter had the time for them. Woody
