My name is Jim Welles. I own and operate JFW Ranch Consulting, LLC, 10600 Eagle Rock Ave, Albuquerque, NM 87122. My phone number is 505.294.7861 or 505-967-6562 cell. I have been a registered outfitter in New Mexico for 20+ years.

We have 5 out of the 12 total spots on the LOBO RANCH open this fall. The Lobo is 46,000 deeded acres west of Albuquerque. http://www.newmexicobiggamehun...obo-ranch-elk-hunts/

Right now, our October 1-5 spot is full, our Oct 15-19 spot is open for 2 rifle hunters (4 total). We can still accommodate archery hunters in Sept and we will limit if requested to 2, or we have late season Nov-Dec rifle-muzzy spots open. We can be very flexible on dates as well. These are fully outfitted spots with excellent accommodations and food. The cost of a fully outfitted 7 archery hunt is $7,000 + NM Gross Receipts tax. The cost of a 5 day muzzy hunt is $6,000 + tax. The cost of a 5 day rifle hunt is $6,500 + tax. Securing and cost of the NM Elk license is the hunters responsibility ($630) and meat processing and taxidermy are the responsibility of the hunter. We field cape and quarter your harvest.

Will discount for sale of all 5 remaining spots to one group.

The following pictures are bulls harvested or taken on the Lobo. I have pictures of the lodging for review as wellSmiler

Thanks AR

Jim Welles

Called today and left my phone on your message machine. I'm home evenings Alaska time. I am serious and have a few questions about elk success on your hunt. If I hunt late in the season and come with a double rifle (may or may not be scoped) how much percentage do I lose in my quest for a good representative bull elk--read 6x6?
Any other game available--whitetail, pronghorn, mule deer, and mountain lion--the species I would like to take with a double rifle.
Cheers,
Cal

Hello Cal-

Got your voice mail late last night. I should have tried you then as I think there is a 2-3 hour time change in Alaska right?

To your question....I believe you would seriously hamper your chances of success using a double without a scope. Excepting archery season, shots with either in-line muzzy or rifle will most likely have a minimum of 200 yards and most likely further at that time of year as they are in their winter range and in more open country. There is terrain we can use at times and we would certainly do our best to get you in and you never know.....our guide is very good. However, in all honestly I think you will have cut your chances of success by a minimum of 50%. There is no statute saying you can't have two riflesSmiler We could try to get you in and if does not work, you could use an alternative rifle.

With regard to other species, we have lion and Aoudad, (barbary sheep) that could be harvested if encountered. You will need to purchase that license prior to hunting. The elk hunts are 5 days and we have encountered other species while in the field. Never hurts to have the tags in pocket if you can afford it.

Hope this helps. Will try you this evening and thanks for the inquiry!

Jim

Hi Jim:
I was busy with a building project and missed your reply. Try me in the evening your time. I am 3 hours behind east Texas or central time so will be home when you call.

I only have two old double with scopes--.350 no2 Rigby and a .450-400. Both from the 1920s, both box lock ejector rifles. 100 yards is easy, 200 is stretching it a bit but do-able. I'm retired and lots of free time in the fall and winter. I am interested in a good elk for a European mount. No cape and I can't take the meat back to AK so would have to donate it there.

All I hunt with are doubles by choice. .450-400 for caribou, .500 for grizzly in a week, .600 for moose and several Africa trips, 4-bore for bison, etc.

What dates would you suggest?

Cheers,
Cal
