Make sure one books at least 4 hrs stop over in Dubai if one is transferring guns. The Lusaka Harare flight is not boarded on terminal but far away from any terminal and requires a bus transfer. Emirates was not able to transfer my gun in 2 hrs and it is on the next flight. I have to spend a night at a crappy hotel near JFK. Otherwise emirates is great to travel with firearms. Mike

Looks like I will be on that same flight out of Harare first of September with a two hour connect in Dubai, from Dubai we fly to Boston.

I hate to say this but there is a very high probability emirates will not be able to transfer the gun in time. Unlike NYC there are not 4 flights a day to Boston so there might be issues on when they get you your gun. The beauty of emirates gun transfers is Its treated as special baggage and carefully monitored/controlled. That same care makes 2 hr transfer impossible especially if the Harare plane is parked 30-45 minutes from a terminal. Mike

Last year I did this flight. I got on in Lusaka but the flight originated in Harare. We had a 2 hour layover in Dubai for our flight to LAX. My rifle and duffle made it, my friend's duffle did not. What was nice though, was an Emirates rep was at our arrival gate in LA with a plaque with his name on it. She explained his luggage was not on the flight. We didn't have to wait around a carousel hoping to find his duffle. She escorted him directly to a desk where he gave them the info where they were to deliver his luggage. We had already planned for him to over night at my home and fly out to his home in Laredo, Texas the next morning. His luggage was waiting for him when he arrived home to Laredo. I too was concerned about any 2 hour layover flying with guns, but it worked for me last year. I'm booked for the same flights this year and I'm hopeful all will go well again. I'll let you know when I arrive in LAX September 12. Best regards, D. Nelson

Zephyr: I'm in Zim now and thinking of taking Emirates for next year's hunt. You are from VT? Where abouts? I moved from Cabot VT to AK in 1984 and a few weeks ago was in VT looking at real estate as I'm thinking of a change--part of the year anyway. I would not have departed VT for anyplace except Alaska. Good luck on your hunt? What are you after? Anyone else having issues like Beretta682E describes? Just curious as I am on the flight from Lusaka-Dubai-Boston in late October and was told 2 hr was enough due to the fact that you arrived and departed from the same international terminal.

Not sure this will answer your question. But, depending on what time is your flight arriving, it could mean you need longer transfer time. I travel quite a lot on Emirates, and other airlines, from Dubai International airport. It is quite busy most of the time and things move along. But, sometimes late at night it becomes VERY VERY busy, and getting from your plane to the terminal takes a long time.

Just returned from Lusaka (flt originated in Harare) to Dubai with 2 hr connection to my LAX flight. The person assisting me at check in in Lusaka told counter clerk I had a tight connection, so my duffle and rifle case were marked with an "Express connection" label and was told it would be put in the fist hold unloaded. Something worked as they made it off first in LAX! Best regards, D. Nelson I did get the big X at Global Entry because of my firearm and spent an hour waiting for someone to escort me to Custom. Their criticism was I hadn't inform Customs I was taking the rifle out of the country. I told them I had informed the airline and showed the Dubai police approval form listing flights and rifle serial numbers. They said my 4457 was issued in 2014. Again I explained 4457 don't expire. I was clearly too tired to go though it with them an further after 25 hrs of flying. I think my answers didn't fit the boxes on their computer. They finally sent me on my way!

Just returned from Zim, flew Emirates from Boston could not have had an easier and nicer experience. Was met at Boston by agent and ushered to the front of the line. checked duffles with ammo and gun case no one asked to look at rifles. We spent 36hrs in Dubai duffles and gun case were checked through to Harare and held in Dubai until we checked in for our Dubai Lusaka Harare flt. Guns physically checked in Harare. On the way back checked duffles and guns in Harare through to Boston, 2.5 hour layover in Dubai on to Boston spent 10 minutes with customs in Boston and out the door. Will certainly fly Emirates again....

Just returned from Africa. We flew Emirates from Fort Lauderdale to Johannesburg and return. We had a 3 hour layover connecting in Dubai both ways. Each time prior to boarding, we were stopped, calls were made to security and the gate personnel assured us our firearms and ammunition were on board. We were stuck in Johannesburg waiting for our airport to reopen following Hurricane Irma. Emirates kept us up to date and handled all of the flight changes and firearm permit changes with Dubai security with no problems. We stayed the extra days in Africa Sky and they took great care of us. I cannot say enough good things about Emirates and Africa Sky. Safe travels................LL

Rather than start a new thread, I was hoping one of the frequent Emirates flyers can tell me what containers are required for ammunition - I have recently been told that an MTM Casegard or similar withing checked luggage is sufficient and the padlocked Pelican type case one uses on SAA incase they want to send it as a separate item is not required. I'm waiting on clarification from my local rep but thought it worth asking here. Formerly Gun Barrel Ecologist

I've flown Emirates several times and have used MTM cases for my ammo, I use the cases that will accommodate a small padlock and place small TSA locks on them, no problems. Karl Evans

I traveled to Zambia last year and this year via Emirates and had my ammo as you referred to, mtm casegard type ammo box with TSA padlock inside my duffle. All went well! Best regards, D. Nelson

Thanks guys Darin, I take it you just had a tsa lock on a H50 series box rather than an R50 or similar inside a locked Ammo can? http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/pr...ammo-boxes-rifle.php I usually just travel with taped up J20s inside a locked duffel on domestic flights, I'm hoping I can do the same and not have to deal with the bulk and weight of pelican case or an Ammo can. Btw, congratulations on the very nice pair of kakulis Formerly Gun Barrel Ecologist

I just flew on Emirates. My ammo was stored in a locked plastic MTM Ammo can. I used a small one that would just hold my ammo (3 boxes of 30-06 and 3 boxes of 9.3x74R). It was inside one of my locked suitcases. They never weighed it or asked to see it. We did not fly back with any ammunition as it was all expended in South Africa. Safe shooting and safe travels..........Larry

GBE I doubt you'll have any problem with Emirates and ammmo as long as your duffle is locked and you have your ammo in a hard case. They never looked at mine or weighed it. Just besure you have the Dubai police permission document for rifle and ammo. I did have to present that at check in going and coming home. I'll try to post a pic of my plastic ammo can but have to get to my pc. You'll have a great time on Emirates. Best regards, Darin

I lock my duffle with a little TSA lock and put this ammo can in my duffle and it has the same type little TSA lock on it.
