Have done the P.E. internal jaunt a couple times. How is the Durban airport to deal with -- firearms handling, especially?

Thanks!

Barry

Really easy! You'll have your firearms permit with you from J'burg SAP, you will have to show your permit, sign the document book etc. but very easy and typically pretty quick.

The firearms office is outside the baggage claim area. As you leave the BC area stay to your left first hole in the wall on the left. It's a right squeeze typically. But that's the worse of it.

The only thing about Durban that is an issue is that they always insist you must pack your ammo in a seperate case and that is must be less then 5 Kg (11 lbs). But they don't just weight the ammo but the whole case. This is on my return flight so I make sure I "consume" all my ammo on the hunt. Other than that, KZN is an awesome hunt destination. Good hunting.

Thanks to the 2014 World Cup, the Durban airport is the most modern in SA.

Your rifle case will not be on the luggage carousel. After you pick up any other luggage, you exit the baggage area into the terminal.

Just outside that door there is a police desk on the left where you show your Firearm Permit and pick up your rifle. Your PH will probably be standing there waiting for you.

So, going both ways I still have to transit international to domestic and do the "guy with the trolley" coming back to go home, right? I don't mind the chatting up and minor tip, but straight to Durban International sounded appealing.

Like BigBullet says. Be sure when departing Durban that you check the ammo separately, and not in your checked baggage or gun case. Best remedy is to not bring any ammo back if possible. We made the mistake of packing ammo in our checked bags departing from Durban. Almost missed flight back into Joburg. I might mention the airline attendant told us to pack the ammo in the checked baggage. She was WRONG! Cannot begin to tell you what a rodeo played out while they looked for our checked bags in the cargo hull of plane. Quite the ordeal. Never, ever, again. Hope this helps.
