I want to take an extra, small 1-5 QD scope to Zim. Never done before. I looked on TSA and they say they are allowed in checked and carry-on. What has the reality been for travelers recently? Instead of dialing POI from softs to solids take two scopes one set for each. Your safest bet is to print up the relevant regulations and have them with you. If TSA objects, ask for a supervisor and politely discuss the regulations. Of course, twenty years ago I was told I couldn't bring a small screwdriver using 1" interchangeable bits (for a rifle training class). Why? "Because you might try to disassemble the plane in flight!" The well of stupidity is immeasurably deep!

My understanding you should have no problems in most c. But, in some you might run into a problem. It is not the TSA that give you hassle. But other countries you might fly through.

I didn’t have any problems last year. The only thing was in Polokwane they just wanted to take turns looking through it. You might also consider that depending on the QD set up you have for the 2 scopes, the difference between softs and solids impact is likely less than the difference between removing and attaching 2 different scopes/rings.

You're point taken. Last year on different rifle there was a couple inch difference. This year I'm taking different rifle and haven't got the chance (weather) to see what the spread is. Just trying to avoid too much tweaking in country. Granted, at least for myself I would still shoot to check. Mounting: 2 QD's rings on pic rail. This could be a moot point if after I shoot POI might be better. Not sure of your question. Is it "can I take 2 scopes" or is it "can I take a scope in my carry on bag"? Sure you can take 2 scopes. As to travelling with it in your carry on why would you want to do that? Now you would have to worry about security scans/inspections and the resulting questions in addition to having to be extra careful with the bag under your seat or in the overhead. The easiest way to bring a second scope is to place the spare in the gun case along with the rifle. I wouldn't even dream of transporting a spare scope in a checked bag (that wasn't a locked gun case of course). Same with binoculars. Place them in the gun case and don't worry about them.

I took extra scope in carry on early in my hunting days. Security just before getting on plane wanted to go through may carry on (backpack) as they do sometimes in some countries. they dropped the scope. now I put anything like that in my gun case. Also, TSA is the least of your worries, most of the time it is just someone in the chain that doesn't know what they are doing and don't want to make a mistake.

RAR60, If your guns don't arrive your extra scope in the carry-on is going to be useless. Just put everything in your gun case. Also if you are not carrying your spare scope in your carry-on their is no chance of being hassled about it. Even if you are in the right about carrying the scope in your carry-on why take the chance of some dodo giving you a hard time about it. Travel issues can taint your safari. Avoid as many as you can. Just curious, do your POI's vary that much? Have not been to Africa in decades, but the last time I went, my factory softs and hand loaded solids were within 1/2" at 100y...plenty good.

Gentlemen, thanks for the input and the consensus. Just put in gun case and eliminate another headache that can or will occur. Done! Zim 2006 Zim 2007 Namibia 2013 Brown Bear Togiak Nat'l Refuge Sep 2010 Argentina 2019 RSA 2023 Tanzania 2024 Zimbabwe 2025 SCI Life Member USMC

Squeezenhope, I reload and last year with other rifle I had a hard time getting to inside an inch. As I mentioned earlier. This rifle because of weather I haven't had a chance to see where I'm at. Hopefully, it might be a better POI for both. Last year I started out at about 2in. Also,I must say I'm pretty anal about it. I just finished sighting my 458 with 420 CEB Raptors at 50 yards then checked the sights with the 400 CEB gr Safari Solids and the solids hit 1 1/2 inches high at the same distance so I had to drop the powder charge down on the solid to get them close
