I'll be travelling to Joburg in July, then to Capetown for a few days, then up to MOZ for a hunt. Does anyone know of an agent in Capetown who can meet me at the airport & walk me throgh the gun registration process? Steve @ Travel with Guns was unaware of anyone providing this service in Capetown...

You don't say how long you will be in Joburg, or where you are coming from?? I would think you would clear your Guns in Joburg @ the Airport before going on to Capetown, as you will be changing from a Intl. Flight to a Domestic Flight. Then when you go to Mozambique you would go back thru Joburg. and clear them again @ the Airport before boarding the Intl. flight to Moz.? The reason I think this way is you will be coming into Joburg on a Intl. Flight and leaving on a Domestic Flight and will need to clear your Guns before boarding the Flight to Capetown. When we stayed in Capetown the Hotel locked our Guns in their Safe Room, and returned them when we checked out. We then Cleared them in Joburg before boarding the Intl. flight back to the states. Clearing Guns in Joburg has not been difficult for me as long as you have all your paperwork filled out correctly. Just my .02 cents worth.

joester, Unless I'm not understanding your post I agree with Larry. I think if you enter RSA through JNB, clear customs and get your RSA gun permit there Capetown will not be an issue with your guns and you'll not need meet/greet there. Mark MARK H. Have done both with guns, Joester, landed directly from London back when SAA had a direct flight to Cape Town, and landed in Joburg, cleared customs and taken a domestic flight to Cape Town. If you land in Joburg, you will clear customs there and that means getting your South African Temporary Firearms Import Permit there. You then take bags, including guns, over to the domestic side of the Terminal, make sure your ammo is out of your suitcase and in a locked box of its own, check in, get your firearms and separate box of ammo tagged, take it over to the firearms office not far from domestic check in and go through security to your flight. In Cape Town you pick up your normal bags, then move from the carousel towards the exit and stop at the Firearms office where your guns and ammo will be delivered. The officer will check your Firearms Permit agains your guns' serial numbers, likely not bother to look at the ammo, but might, and then off you go. When you go to Mozambique you have the same procedure boarding the first flight from Cape Town. I have had to pick up bags at the domestic side in Joburg, and then recheck when going international. You need to double check on that so you don't arrive in Moz without bags Regards, Tim

All relevant information given. I encountered a couple problems flying with Kalula last year: first is my rifles ended up on the carousel while I waited for them at the cop shop. Fortunately a concerned citizen reported it and the cops ran to collect the rifles. Secondly, Kalula charged an additional R 300 per rifle as a handling fee. Make sure you fly to Cape Town and not George Airport as George does not handle firearms. If you do take your rifles to Cape Town make sure they have safe keeping facilities prior to your arrival. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks to all; I'm wondering if it may be feasible to have my rifle tagged upon arriving in Joburg and have The Afton House hold it while we play in Capetown for a few days? Or must I always be "near" my tagged firearm?

I would think that Afton house could hold them in their locked walk-in safe pending your return after visiting Cape Town, but I'm not 100% sure. That would really be the way to go if at all possible. Does Steve Turner know the answer to that question?

Yes Afton house can hold them, should be no problem. Thanks! Brian Clark Blue Skies Hunting Adventures www.blueskieshunting.com Email at: info@blueskieshunting.com African Cape Trophy Safaris www.africancapesafaris.com Email at: brian@africancapesafaris.com 1-402-689-2024

Afton House held mine while I visited Capetown. They met me at the airport on my return flight to JNB and dropped them off. 30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.
