The one that was turned around back to Jo'burg for a medical emergency? Everyone's guns make it OK?

I was terrified that I'd be tossed into jail after having to collect my formerly in-transit from Windhoek to JFK guns at the baggage carousel and board a bus for a hotel in the city, sans any South African license or documentation. But despite my fears and an incredulous look by a junior South African customs/police employee the next day, I was told by what was apparently a senior person just to give them the serial numbers, sign the register and re-check the guns on the aircraft the next day with no real hassle. Anybody have a different experience?
