Firearm insurance

KevinNYFirearm insurance
With the cost of even a factory gun and scope easily reaching into thousands of dollars these days and considering custom guns or old doubles, does anyone have recommendations for insurance that covers them while in transit on airlines domestically and international or even just in shipping from a gunsmith for repairs?

butchlocyou schedule them on your household policy

RAR60If you are a member of SCI, they have an agent in PA that does them and I found them to be more reasonable than scheduling on your homeowners.

JTEXI have a policy with Eastern insurance to cover my guns, very reasonable ime, it over covers them in transit.
I would not rely on homeowners insurance....

WV HitmanI have Nationwide. 20 years ago they stopped gun insurance. I switched to State Farm. My house burned down years ago with 65 guns. State Farm did excellent taking care of me. No complaints.

StonecreekIf you can afford an overseas hunt you can afford the risk of loss of a gun costing $1,500 or $2,000. If you can't afford that then you need to stay home.

KevinNYI included custom guns and old doubles in my original post. If you can post snide remarks, you can fully read a post before making yourself look foolish.

lavacaAIG used to offer a good product. I'll have to look over all of the many stickers on my guncase to find the reference. But it was pretty good as I recall.

470EDDYCall CorVens Insurance Agency.563-242-5423 Tim Hartsook is general agent, Diane handles blanket coverage.
I have an all risk policy they issue that covers in home, in vehicle, in the field, postal or UPS/FedEx shipments, and on the Airlines, $380 for $100,000 blanket and specifically listed over $10,000 each. I have not had to have any appraisals, they have accepted my values, invoices, or referrals to values on similar guns displayed on Guns International....although asking prices may far exceed sale value, only a reference for your desired insured values.
It was underwritten by TRAVELLERS, now a new underwriter I don't recall without looking.
I met them at a Beinfeld Gunshow more than 10 years ago and happy ever since!! I have a claim pending now when I got flipped off the shooting table in a trailer as we were changing Prairie Dog towns!! Three rifles flipped too, 2 damaged

470EDDYNote, scheduling on your home owners policy requires appraised values on anything on anything over $1-2,000, expensive and ROYAL PIA to get qualified appraisals, especially without packing all your bandukis to appraiser!!
Then your premium is going to run $1.30/100 value, or $13/thousand, $130/ 10 thousand, $1300/100 thousand ...and BIG ARGUMENTS if you have a claim!!
Insurance agents usually won't cover for a trip and cancel, they gotcha for a year!!
Yes, I do this for my wife's jewelry!! EXPENSIVE...
I despise Insurance companies, can't live without them, and they get a pound if flesh for something that rarely happens!!

Stonecreek,
WHile I can afford the risk of losing a gun I still want my money back if I can get it. Its also not just international, I took 2 shotguns when I went to California this year to go hunting with my Brother in Law and there seems like there were some shenanigans in Boston on the way home with my gun case. If the guns went "missing"I would want to be able to replace them.
I have the SCI insurance and it was very easy to work with the agent including a few calls back and forth agreeing on values and the insurance was cheaper than the named item policy I had with Statefarm.

Purchasing insurance simply gives you a cause of action to go to court to enforce a contract. Lose a $15,000 double rifle? Good luck hiring a lawyer and recovering if the insurance company simply stonewalls your claim. How much do you think the lawyer is going to want up front as a retainer, then how much of the settlement will he take if and when you get paid? A "successful" action to force the insurer to pay may simply represent throwing good money after bad.
If it helps you sleep better nights having paid someone a hefty amount for the right to file a claim, then by all means your health comes first, so pay them whatever they ask and sleep in peace.
But perhaps someone who has actually had a claim filed and paid on a gun lost on an overseas trip can speak up and tell us how it all came out? Maybe there are some happy endings I'm unaware of.

470EDDYCall Tim Hartsook at Corvens Insurance. He will provide you with all kinds of war stories about firearms losses and settlements. I think you will be surprised!!
Hiring a lawyer should NOT BE REQUIRED when you have quality and knowledgeable agents representing you!!
I have a damage claim in progress now, 4 months in the making due to getting repairs done. One call, reported, no questions, send us the invoices for repairs and shipping.
I clearly DO NOT suggest that you list your firearms on your homeowners policy with agents who don't know, and may despise guns!! They you will get into what Stonecreek is stating!!

drjGun and Trophy Insurance. Will insure your guns and your trophies for what it would cost to replace, not just taxidermy cost. Very reasonable rates. I personally know at least three shotgun shooters whom have lost their five figure guns (first figure was not a one) that dealt with claims and were all very happy. They cover guns in transit whether you are hunting or shipping the guns for repair.

lavacaStonecreek,
I'm a lawyer who has represented insurance companies for 37 years in all kinds of litigation, including "bad faith" litigation brought by policyholders. I don't handle these type of matters, but most the last thing most insurance companies want is an EC claim (extra-contractual -- that's over and above their policy limits either because of common law bad faith or state statutory claims). I buy the insurance. Thankfully, I've never had to make a claim.

But, I would say that Stonecreek's comment about a rifle costing $2,000 isn't realistic at all. A scope is more than that.

I would second this post. In the shotgun shooting circles Larry and his son Cole are very well known and respected. I’ve not had to file a claim but have no concerns that is would be handled fairly if I did. Price is very fair IMO.

+1 And it's a declared value policy so you don't need appraisals.
