actually two questions. I am heading out to jburg monday on SAA. I will layover there for a couple of days visiting friends, no hunting just hanging in pretoria, and then off to bulawayo to do some irrigation work and hunt a little.
I have an invitation letter from my PH in Zim, nothing from a SA PH since I am not hunting there.

1) will the invitation letter from Zim PH along with the temporary rifle permit be ok since I am not flying out next day.

2) due to taking about everything in the world other than the kitchen sink over for folks, I am really close on weight. I have not traveled with out ammo in a separate lockable case in a few years. Is this a SAA policy or just our own suggestion?

thanks for your answers in advance.

My experience is that even with the same airline different check-in staff will require different dispositions. I like to be prepared for any eventuality. That means I am prepared to have my ammo in a separate locked check-in piece of luggage. I use a small Pelican case with combination TSA locks on it.

Imagine your flight gets cancelled and you're offered a different routing with another airline with different rules. Being ready for the most stringent requirement is always best in Africa.

The driver from Africa Sky that helped me get through the airport and on to Botswana told me his biggest PITA is trying to find a separate, lockable hard case for ammo at the last minute to appease a airline counter clerk.

YMMV.

Hey Brent-

Total agreement with all above. Take a small Pelican case with two TSA locks - find the heavy duty locks. Traveling without it is not worth the potential grief. Good luck on the trip and the hunt.
