I will need to spend a few days in SA before my hunt in Mozambique. Do I need to fill out the SAP 520 form? What other forms or ID do need to avoid problems at the airport.

If you are traveling with firearms you will need to complete the SAP 520. Be sure you have the US customs form 4457 which shows proof that you purchased the firearm and other valuables in the US. You will also need to show airline tickets and usually a invitation and information letters from the outfitter. But since you are going to Moz I am not sure about those letters maybe someone with more experience on that can inform you.

There are also some firms that help with the firearms process like Air2000.

Good Hunting,

Donato,

You will need an invite letter from your outfitter in Mozambique. My advise would be to enlist one of the meet/greet/gun permit services. Have them meet your flight, hold your guns while you are in RSA and then help you with checking back in for the Mozambique flight. They also will meet you on the other end and assist you there also.

I'm no expert but I think you specifically need the "In Transit" SAPS permit.

Riflepermits.Com got one for me and it was easy enough but I failed to arrange in advance for them to assist on the return leg. I managed to muddle though with some local assistance on my way back.

It's really not that hard to DIY.

Riflepermits.com has the best guidance/instructions I've found.

I only have one SAPS 520 experience, and have only one thing to say....Air2000. They, and Maxwell(their guy at OR Tambo), were incredible! I spent less than 5 minutes in the SAPS office, on the way in. On the way out of the country, he hand carried my gun case through the proper channels. Super service, that was worth every penny.
