Can somebody suggest an Afton-House-like accomodation in Lusaka? I will have to spend a night at Lusaka in order to catch a very early charter into the Luangwa. I will be arriving at 9PM the previous day, so I do not need anything fancy. The place should preferably be not too expensive, clean and not too far from LUN airport. Somebody suggested a place called the Pioneer Camp: Is that a good option? Thanks in advance... Antonio

Antiono Can I suggest you email Mike Borman of Bangweulu Taxidermy Ltd. based in Lusaka. Mike is the agent guy whom does most all the dip/pack for our own personal clients. Just mention to Mike that you were refered by (Peter Bird of Balla-Balla Safaris) he knows me and all the Bird family very well. Contact for Mike is: bangweulu@microlink.zm Cheers, Peter

I have stayed at pioneer camp several times over the years. I was going to suggest even before I noticed that you had mentioned it in your post. The pluses for Pioneer are that it is closer to the airport than the other options, it is comfortable, and it has a nice atmosphere. Also important, they offer airport transfers. I would book one of there en-suite chalets. They are perfect for a quick overnite stay. Clean comfortable and you we know that you are in Africa. But Afton house it is not. It is a long way from town, so you won't be "popping in" to grab a toothbrush or whatever. Another option would be Nena's Guesthouse. The only problem is that it is in the heart of Lusaka a long way from the airport. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

While this may be a little late for you, I have stayed at Piccolo which I found quite nice. Way back when they could be reached at piccolo@uudial.zm and had the following telephone numbers: +260 1 261 316 and +260 1 261 322. I have no idea if these old telephone numbers are still valid, they may have added additional prefixes since then. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.
