Can a person exchange U.S. dollars for Namibian dollars at the Frankfurt airport, or do you have to wait until you are in Windhoek?

douglastYour best bet is to obtain the dollars in Namibia using you ATM card. You will get a better exchange rate than at the bank.

Use your ATM card. There is an ATM in the airport lobby in Windhoek. Our have the outfitter stop at an ATM.
If my memory serves me correctly there is also an Exchange at the airport.
Seems to me like it was close to the same exchange rate as the Bank in town.
And, it was open on Sunday.
I can't speak to exchange in Namibia, but in RSA I found my credit/ATM card (Visa) gave me enough of a more favorable rate over the exchange counter AND my local bank purchase that it was worth using it whenever possible.
BTW: Namibia takes Rand one for one.

two years ago when I asked to exchange some Euro with Namibian Dollars here in Italy, at the bank where I have my checking account, the bank employee was astonished, looking at me as I was a crazy. He told me that it was an unusual currency, and they did not have it. I asked Traveller Cheques in US Dollars, and I risk to have the same answer.
I was the first in two or three years that wants to buy them. Then I discovered that outfitter was not so happy to get them, because he loose something like the 5% because the bank commission.
At the end I decided: the next June I'll leave bringing with me Euro, I'll pay with them the outfitter and I believe that he will be happy, and I'll exchange some more when I'll need at any bank in Namibia. I think that I wil not loose so much in the exchange.

StonecreekThe Euro has enjoyed a strong two-year run against the US Dollar and as a result has become a preferred currency in many places. If I were European and travelling to Africa, I would simply carry Euros or use my credit card to exchange my Euros for local currencies.
The Namibian Dollar is hard to trade outside of Namibia, but the SA Rand is accepted on a one-to-one basis in Namibia. It would make sense that if you are going to Namibia and circumstances cause you to return with some amount of local currency that it would be best to have SA Rand instead of N$ in order to more easily re-exchange.
NOTE: Credi card companies vary on their exchange policies and ATM fees. Check out what your card(s) do and use the one that gives you the best deal. Almost all of them will treat you better than money exchange kiosks or banks.
