Do most of you hire out help to book flights? I am thinking of doing this and have read a lot on here of some of the experiences and it seems like the way to go. What are the costs of having someone book your flights, meet and greet and to do your gun permits with the different companies?

Also if you do end up needing help while in travel who are the top agencies that can assist you 24 hours a day 7 days a week so it will be trouble free?

Are there any benefits from one company over the other?

Kathi Klimes arranged my trips. You will not find a consensus as to one best person/agency.

There are several meet-and-greet/permit companies for South Africa. Not sure of the current rates.

Kathi Klimes arranged my travel to Zambia in October. I had six connections going and coming from Durango, Co to camp in Zambia. Everything went without a hitch both ways. If something would have gone wrong, I had someone to call to help straighten things out. If I had booked it myself, who would I call?

If it costs a little extra, it is a small ammount compared to the cost fo the hunt.

Kathi is the best!

Shawn at Gracy travel is top notch - none better.

That said, I booked flights for my hunt this year online with SAA by myself and had no problems. The flights were pretty straightforward however - Dulles to Johannesburg to Harare and back. My PH's wife met me at Harare International on arrival, and the Cessna pilot stayed with me all the way from camp to the gate in Harare for my return.

If you have any doubts about booking your flights, however, I would go with Gracy. If you travel on SAA, make sure to print off the pages from their website that show hunters get an extra free baggage allowance of 22kg. This amounts to an extra checked bag free. The SAA folks at Dulles never seem to know about this provision, but they always honor it when I show them the policy posted on their website.

Also make sure you carry the credit card you used to buy the ticket online. If you don't have it they will try and make you buy a new ticket.

Frosbit - you make a very good point! For my most recent trip,I had to call my bank from Dulles to get my old credit card number. When I told SAA my original card had been stolen and the account cancelled, they could have cared less. Without the original CC number, they refused to issue me a boarding pass. It was not a fun experience! Thank God my bank (USAA) came through.

Admiral,
Afton Guest house has an outstanding meet/greet service as well as a fairly comfortable guest house for travelers that need quarters for an overnight in Joberg. On their website they also have a download for the SAPS 520 if you need to get the permits for South Africa. You just fill out the paperwork and mail it to them and they take care of the rest of it for you. I have used them each time I went to SA and everything went off without a hitch.
As for the travel agency, I have never used one and couldn't help there.
