I wanted to make sure that I understand the policy of the South African Police Service on transiting through JNB. In order for you to be considered in transit one must be getting on a connecting flight AND that carrier must have a baggage agreement with the airline that you arrived on. Is that correct?

Jon,

If your issue is picking up your baggage and rechecking it on the next flight you are correct. Personally and what I recommend to clients is to pick up your luggage at O.R. Tembo and physically recheck it onto your connecting flight. It feels good to know your kit made it to Africa and if it doesn't arrive at your final destination you have a pretty good idea where it is. If you check it all the way through it might still be on the tarmac in St. Louis which is exactly what happened to some folks I shared a camp with. There stuff arrived 5 days later.

Mark,

If you do that when you are travelling through Jo'Burg to another country, (claim it at OR Tambo) wouldn't you have to get a SAPS permit?

I think what the OP is asking is how not to have to bother with the whole SAPS hassle when transiting through RSA.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I am confronted with the reality that it is just too difficult to bring my guns on this trip.

I elected to fly BA which I have done before but between BA, SAPS, and Botswana it is just too much. Both in terms of cost and paperwork.

My other problem is that as of yet I don't know if there is someone who can legally hold guns for me in Maun while I travel around.

Frank,

You are correct but I've done it several times and with the assistance of a meet/greet it's not really a big hassle at all.

Bud,

Yeah you are right. I can’t possibly justify the headache and the cost by bringing my guns.

I was hoping a rational person would cyber slap me across the face.

.

Just back from Zim. Flew LH Dusseldorf to Joburg via Ffm. Got a temp SAPs permit on arrival (15 mins) - an overnight in Joburg and out to Harare on SAA following day. Kept SAPs permit for return trip. Harare into Joburg showed permit and gun and was out in 10 minutes. Next day LH to Germany - checked case, handed in permit at ORT and away we went.

No hassle and no cost and I hunted with my gun ......

Paperwork and some patience and it's pretty straight forward.

Have a great safari whichever option you go with.

Cheers

No.

Part of the enjoyment and excitement of hunting is the months/yeas working up the 'perfect' cartridge/rifle/scope/mounts/handload for the intended game. Doesn't matter if the hunt is in Mississippi or Nambia. Whitetail or kudu.

Those that dont understand it, fine, because I am not sure I can explain it. Wink

Left handed with a 12 1/4” length of pull - definitely not an option!
