I know our ammo will need to be in a locked case in our travel luggage. I have not really be able to find an ammo travel case that I like.

I have found some metal lock boxes at Office Depot but they seemed very heavy to me.

I would appreciate any advice or recommendations you can give on where to buy a ammo travel case.

Thanks!!

TBD

Go Duke!!

Pelican 1200 works for me especially if you have to take it out and ship it separately.

I use a Plastic one from MTM and put a TSA Lock on it. Three trips to Africa and I have yet to have anyone look at it or my Ammo. It holds 1 box of .470 and 3 box's of .416 with a little room left over. I'm going to RSA in July, but will be picked up in Jo-berg so I won't have to transfer to another Plane. Not sure how it will work on the return trip, but I'm flying on Delta so I should be OK?

I am also using a pelican double pistol case for my ammo. Will lock with the TSA locks but I am going to just place the locks inside the case with the ammo and lock the duffel bag it resides in with other TSA locks. Who know which direction they will want it when they check it. My ammo weighs right at 11 lbs (5KG) without the weight of the pelican.

One can only hope this will work.

I too used a pistol case with the foam removed. I also used a case for night vision and removed the foam. It was similar to a Pelican (I think) with the pressure seal knob. Both worked great until SAA idiots really had no idea how ammo should travel (in bag or separate checked with guns).

I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

Interestingly, Lufthansa and Air Namibia do not require seperate locked cases for ammo. We just put it in original packaging right in our luggage and locked the luggage. They were fine with that.

Depending on which airlines you are dealing with and which bureaucrats you run up against, you may need to consider the weight of the container to be part of your 5 kilo allowance.

Even though Delta does not mention the case requirement at all, and SAA seems to allude to the oddity of this requirement [see below]. The rule may be interpreted by some to include the case weight itself too[ ACSA -Airports Company South Africa- baggage staff, or firearms desk staff, or whoever!].

This requirement does result from action by ACSA and, of course SAA is forced to follow it! Where ACSA came up with it is open to speculation.

From the SAA web site FAQ's
Ammunition may be carried within checked luggage, provided that it is securely packed in a lockable or secure container, and that the total weight does not exceed 5kg’s of ammunition per passenger carrying a firearm. (In general, most airlines allow the carriage of ammunition in terms of the dictums of ICAO Dangerous Goods Standards and associated airline processes followed in terms of IATA requirements/guidance).

As noted above it says "lockable" NOT "locked"! Leaves a lot of wiggle room for those inspecting the cases!

The Cabelas one listed above has been the one that I have used on 6 Safaris, and in traveling to Mexico to hunt as well. On the first Safari to Africa, I used a metal lock box from Office Depot. I prefer the Cabela's box, with the foam removed without any question. By the way, I have never locked it, even though it has two locks on the oustide and comes with two keys.

When we went to Zim last June I found some lightweight softer type of hard plastic fishtackle boxes and tore the guts out. They held the 11 lbs of 375 H&H plus misc. things and only weighed 1/2 pound empty and cost me a whole $6.50. They were set up to use a lock on too.

First trip to RSA we used the heavy metal ones from Office depot thinking that was needed but wasn't.
