I've had several trips over and have always been told sporting equipment does not have the same size limits as other checked bags. While I have not confirmed this, I have never been questioned or charged for an oversized gun case.

My double rifle case is slightly larger than yours (SKB) and have not been charged for oversized on any flights in Delta, Emirates, Qatar, American or United. I bet you won’t have any issues.

did some more checking on Delta web site and the rifle case is concidered sporting goods so the size limit goes from 60 linear inches to 115 inches so no over size charge, did not recheck United because from where I will be leaving from United makes no sence because of the number of cities and airline transfers involved thanks for the answers.
