US issues security alert on travel to Zambia

By Mukosha Funga | Updated: 21 Apr,2016 ,08:53:10

THE UNITED States has warned its citizens intending to visit Zambia in the coming months to be careful as the political campaigns leading to the August 11 general elections are likely to be violent.

And the US Embassy has predicted that results of the polls may take long to tally and to be announced, which may see tension rising from the expectant participants.

According to the Overseas Council Advisory Council (OSAC) Analysis posted on the US embassy website, there is potential for low-level violence during the lead-up and on election day.

“There is potential for demonstrations or low-level violence during the lead-up and on election day, risk for innocent bystanders to get caught up in cadre-initiated violence,” read the travellers advisory analysis.

The analysis also listed internet or radio censorship, intimidation and arrests of journalists as indicators of lack of press freedom in Zambia.

The OSAC analysis further listed more security considerations for the campaign period; between May 16 and August 10.

“Because of the close margins, there is an increased risk for election fraud, voter intimidation, cadre violence, and restrictions on freedom of assembly/speech, increased police presence on the street and more patrols at night, as well as reports of police brutality, recent spike in ritualistic murders,” read the analysis in part.

The OSAC analysis also suggested causes of an uptick in crime.

“Worsening economy and high inflation rates, decreased prices and demand for copper, high unemployment rates, persistent electricity outages and regional drought and man-made reservoirs drying up,” read the analysis.

And the OSAC analysis predicted that results of the August 11 elections would take long to tally and tension was expected during the waiting period.

“Results will take time to tally and it will be several days before final winners are announced. Tension could be expected to be very high during the counting period,” read the analysis.

“OSAC constituents in-country should; avoid demonstrations, political rallies, polling centers, and crowds of any kind, monitor trustworthy, local media for any changes in the election schedule or the security environment…restrict local movement on election day.”

The OSAC analysis stated that the August 11 election was expected to be a close race; between the ‘two-front runners’ President Edgar Lungu and UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.

“August 11 is expected to be a close race. The previous election in January 2015 was the closest election in Zambian history,” read the analysis in part.

Not sure if the security alert has anything to do with the incidents in Lusaka.

I'd be more worried about our community organizer and traitor who seems to be a "wanna be" dictator.

If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

I think a lot of these State Department warnings have largely just become CYA exercises.

Yes, Kathi. This in a city that doesn't have a single gun shop in it. Our Communist/ mini Obama Rahm could screw up a one car funeral. Inept leadership starting at the top filtering its way down the cesspool of Democrap flunkies.
