Is the weight limit on SAA from US to SA still 70#? Or is it now 50? (On coach/economy) Hard to tell from SAA website. Also, when transiting SA at Joburg, flying in on SAA and out the next day on SAA, with a SAPS in-transit permit, can you take your gun case out of the airport, or must it stay there overnight?

My understanding is that international air travel conventions specify that for flights ticketed in the United States that the checked baggage allowance is two bags of not more than 50 pounds each. It is also my understanding that overweight fees apply above 50 pounds up to 70 pounds per bag, and that bags of more than 70 pounds are not accepted. Beyond this minimum, airlines have broad discretion as to the maximum dimensions they will carry and as to baggage that is carried as part of the no-charge baggage allowance, such as golf clubs and other sporting equipment. The checked baggage allowance for passengers ticketed outside of the U. S. is as little as 20kg (44 pounds) per passenger and carry-on baggage may be limited to as little as 7 pounds. Savvy traveler hint: Buy your tickets through a U. S.-based agent.

...unless the rules have changed in two months, once the SAPS 520 form is completed, you may take your firearm(s) with you to RON if desired. However, if you are ticketed on an outbound flight the following day, you can leave your firearms in a SAPS approved "holding area" overnight.

After reviewing everything on the website: Coach/Economy are allowed two bags not to exceed 20KG each (44lbs) and only one carry on. Business class are allowed 30KG and two carry on's. The Carry on size is 9x20x16 (inches) Hope this helps. We leave Saturday so this is somethign I have been looking up.
