From everything I've read SAA is charging $65.00 per firearm for each leg of a flight from the US to RSA. I was looking at flights out of Dulles to Joberg which makes a stop along the way in Northern Africa. I've read where SAA considers this two segments and charges for each segment which results in the $65.00 charge being doubled each way per firearm.

Yesterday I called SAA to verify what the charges would be for transporting firearms and I was told by their representative that the charge would be $65 each way for the case and not per gun. I told the representative that there would be two rifles in the case and she again told me $65 total each way. She told me no extra fee due to the stop along the way to Joberg.

Has anyone traveled this route recently with firearms and what were you charged? If the person I spoke to was right it would be $130 round trip for two rifles in one case. If she is wrong it could be $520 if the charge is per rifle per flight segment. That could be a real surprise when you check in at the airport.

Last yer on SAA I was told and charged per firearm. When I went to the business office to pay the fee the lady there called the agent doing the check in to verify the nubmer of firearms in the case. From SA to Maun 1 fee, returning from Maun to Harare via SA it was 2 fees, returning home from harare to SA it was 1 fee as I changed to Delta for the trip to Atlanta.
