Medical Travel Insurance
This year my wife is traveling to India, Tahiti, eastern Europe, and Tanzania. She has a medical travel policy but it only covers trip durations of 45 days, which means she will come up a bit short on the European trip since she is flying from there to meet me in Tanzania.

So she is looking at different policies. What would you guys recommend? Does Global Rescue cover the medical bills too or is only evacuation?

What is the best out there?

I just bought Global Rescue. Don't know for sure, but hope I don't need it.

We’ve bought Travel Guard several times, mostly for coverage in the event of trip disruption, but policies have medical coverage as well. Had to use the medical on one trip and they covered much more than I expected. Bought Global Rescue a couple of times, partly for the evac portion (Moz and DRC), thankfully haven’t had to use it.

Karl,

You've hunted DRC? Would love to hear about that and do it.

Haven’t hunted DRC, my wife was on the board of a foundation that supported a group in DRC (Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center) and we visited for several days. Beautiful country, but rebel activity shortened our trip and required alternate departure plans, we were near Lake Kivu, forest is incredibly thick. We were able to get very close to several gorillas, pretty neat. A couple of the rangers that accompanied us were killed by rebels a few months after our trip.

I've hunted near the border in Tanzania and that border has always becond. I've always wanted to cross into the biggest country on the continent and hunt. Will never happen, but that is the biggest unexplored place left.

Walter wanted to come hunting with us.

He had quite a few medical problems, so we could not get medical insurance for him.

We made a deal.

That he should not die on safari.

If he did we would use him as hyena bait!

And Walter being Walter, he said that is great.

Just make sure you shoot every hyena that takes a bite out of him!

Since then I think he has been on at least 25 safaris!

And passed away peacefully at home!

God bless his soul!

I’ve switched back & forth over the years between Global Rescue and Ripcord. Thankfully, I’ve never needed either one.

I’m about to embark on a trip to Dubai and Zimbabwe with my wife, who has a serious long term illness. We’ll be gone 4 weeks total, so I’ve been concerned about any medical needs coverage while we’re traveling and haven’t felt that either company provides everything I need. So, I called Shawn Kennedy of Gracy Travel. Shawn recommended Arch RoamRight, telling me that Gracy believes it’s the best option of all. She sent me the cost and coverage information and it’s really a no-brainer to purchase for both of us. Its coverage is far more broad than GR or Ripcord. And since it’s trip specific, the cost is very reasonable.

You’d all do well to consider Arch RoamRight for future travel.

I appreciate the information. My wife and I are leaving next month for a photo safari in southern Africa. I looked at Arch RoamRight and my concern is that the actual healthcare coverage is capped at $75,000. (They do cover medical evacuation more generously). $75K can vanish really quickly with a major trauma, heart attack, or the like, and RoamRight tells me there is no way to increase that limit.

Although I've purchased Ripcord for hunting safaris (and happily never needed to use it), we've used Blue Cross\Blue Shield GeoBlue for international travel as Medicare does not cover anything outside of the USA. GeoBlue also provides medical evacuation coverage. Again, though, we've never needed to file a claim. GeoBlue provides up to $1,000,000 in healthcare coverage.
