UAL is not allowed to open your case at the counter, They do not allow you to do it either besides declaring the firearm they don't do anything else with it. If a CSR at the counter asks you to open your gun case to inspect your rifle immediately demand a supervisor. That's a big no no.
This might have happened a long time ago but I'd have to have a reference before I bought this one hook line and sinker.

FrostbitWhen I checked in with British Air in Seattle on the way to Heathrow last year they insisted that customs come and check my rifle and "paperwork (4457 even though they didn't know what that was). I did have to pull my rifle out in public at the ticket counter after customs arrived. I don't travel with the bolt in so it's a non-issue and it was kind of fun to see the looks on the other folks at check in when a rifle came out of the golfcase (tuffpak)

At JFK last year Delta called the Airport Police, i understand they are re4al Police, and they pulled three guns and took them out of the case in the Terminal. Cop told us the TSA was not authorized or qualified to inspect firearms. I agreede with him about TSA being qualified.
Had united in Tampa take me in a room to check the firearms. I handed a shotgun to the counter supervisor and she had no idea how to check if it was loaded.
Most of the time i just fill out the firearms declaration and put in case and go to TSA with the case, wait for thumbs up and leave to plane.

BuffNutI've been asked to open my gun case at the check in counter to show the agent the rifles are unloaded three times - twice by United (in Chicago and just last month in Vancouver) and once by American (in Dallas). Super, super, super dumb. But I have learned to not argue with anyone at the airport. If I were asked to discharge the firearm to prove it's actually a firearm I might hesitate. Otherwise, I pretty much do what they tell me.

WoodmnctryComing back from a moose hunt in Alaska couple years ago ---- sitting at the gate ready to board --- they paged an individual on the overhead speakers to please come to the podium --- fellow stands up and goes to the podium --- from behind they pull out a duffle bag and ask if it is his ---- he responds in the affirmative ---- TSA types and a cop appear out of somewhere --- they carefully zip open the duffle and pull out a short barreled 870 shotgun --- one in the barrel and several in the magazine --- dude left with those shiny S&W braclets afixed to his wrists ---- unbelievable to say the least.

SaeedA few years ago, as we got to Dar airport to go back home, we were told we had to go to the airport police to inspect our rifles before we are cleared.
I asked why was this being done, as we have never had it before.
We were told that a few days earlier, a departing hunter had an accidental discharge in the airport!
We went to the police office, and officer asked me to get the rifles out of the case, then he turned the barrel towards himself, and looked through it to make sujre it was empty.
I had a very hard time trying to stop from laughing.
