About this time last year, Frankfurt implemented a policy that you had to have an approved permit for bringing rifles through their airport, regardless of whether you claimed the rifles or they were checked through to your destination in Africa. I am starting to make my travel plans to JNB next year and Lufthansa is offering very nicely priced fares from Phoenix where I live. I just wanted to know if anyone has traveled through Germany this year and can give an update on this transit permit process? My understanding is this not only applies to Frankfurt but also to Munich now.

The initial permit requirement was in place in the late spring or early summer. It did not apply to guns in transit (not claimed in Frk.). It now applies to guns even passing through Frankfurt and was imposed by the Frankfurt city government. I do not know about Munich. I too am now traveling a different route, via Atl. and Jbg.and then on to Windhoek. The permit requirement along with a $100 surcharge by Air Namibia (each way) to carry a gun case to Whk.has resulted in me abandoning BOTH Frk and Air Namibia...
