Hey guys. I always cary my ammo separate of course for Africa but I have a US domestic flight question. The United Airlines site says you can travel with the ammo in the same case as the firearm as follows: " The ammunition may be packed in the same container as the firearm or in a separate container. " But I don't really trust it either as too many times the airlines want the ammo separated. So for the minute I have the ammo case along too. Has anyone recently flew United in the US domestically and have any comment on how it went. Thanks guys.

I flew United to hunt turkey with a box of shells in the gun case. No problem. However, that said, your questions like so many others relating to guns, ammo, and air travel, the final word will come down to whomever is in front of you making the decision. Nothing is carved in stone. At my initial boarding I ask the TSA in charge to wrap my gun case in TSA tape to show others down the route my case has already passed inspection. So far it has worked as there has been no issues in my travels 2-3x per year with firarms and ammo. Good luck. Thank you cal. I agree with that 100%. I hate trying to rassle an agent even with their own documents. My reason was if I put the ammo case in the duffel then it is 52 lbs and overweight. If I can go with the rounds in the gun case then Im good on weight except the rifle case of course as extra baggage. If I don't have to check the separate ammo case I generally feel better about it actually arriving with everything else. Good idea for everyone on the TSA wrap. I have actually never had any big troubles but I know it happens.

I always put the ammo in the gun case when flying United. No problem. Just be sure and keep each round in the factory boxes (i.e. no loose rounds). Only problem I had this September was the two TSA locks (they were about $5.00 a piece) were removed from my gun case (by TSA I suppose) and disappeared. The other two non-TSA locks were still on the case. Go figure. Also some domestic airports do not have you escort the gun case to TSA at check-in (Bangor, ME for one), and if you have non-TSA locks, TSA will page you. I have heard of people missing their flights due to this relatively recent change in procedure. BH63 Hunting buff is better than sex!

TexKD, Flew Las Vegas to Gillette, WY last Oct on United. Put my ammo in a Pelican case in my luggage like I'd do for Africa. Everything went very smoothly. Because I had guns they let me check in separately from the herd and I was checked in and on my way to the gate in literally 10 minutes including the TSA check. The return was equally as hassle free. United has had some bad press of late but my experience was very positive. Mark MARK H. I've done this, also, and whether it matters or not it certainly makes me feel better about the chances of everything arriving on time and intact. After all, who wants to risk breaking a TSA "seal"? The United policies on ammunition come directly from TSA's regulations. Airlines are free to adopt more restrictive policies (and even to refuse to carry firearms), however, as long as both TSA and the airline allow ammunition in the gun case that's exactly where I'd put it.
