According to the ticketing agent in JoBurg, SAA changed their requirements on traveling with ammo effective 8/1/14. You may now leave your ammo in your checked bag (in a locked container) leaving JoBurg. However; she also said that security at Port Elizabeth and East London "might" still require it to be removed from checked bags.

Does your ammo need to be in a lock box inside your luggage or just be able to lock your luggage?

My understanding is that it has to be locked and in your checked luggage. If they want to, they could remove it from the checked bag and treat it as a separate item.

Exactly as he says...I used a very similar case and it worked perfectly.

Just returned from South Africa yesterday on SAA. Ammo had to be removed from checked bag and sent by itself in locked box. They put a Firearms tag on it, no extra charge. Said it was a new rule. Same thing for every hunter we talked to on the flight.

Earlier this month I flew (BC) from Harare to Joburg on SAA, then on to Paris and Houston on KLM.

I had my ammo in my americase lock box (like always) and then secured in my check luggage when I left Harare on SAA. All good. I went to the KLM in transit transfer desk at Tambo and checked the status of my luggage, I was told that my ammo had to be separated and tagged at the gate. The new rule for Tambo... no exceptions.

I flew into Tambo on Delta about 20 days earlier
with my ammo locked up in my check luggage. No problems.

TIA... LOL

I always put the ammo in a locked box and in my luggage but like Oz said it can change anytime.

I flew with SAA JFK to Windhoek,Namibia in mid- May.Ammo for the two of us was packed in a locked hard case made by Boyt Harness Co.It was packed in a checked and TSA-locked duffle bag and it went through with no problem. Word seems to be to be prepared by carrying ammo in a loccked hardcase "just in case ".Pulling of ammo and separate checking may be arbitrary on the part of SAA people as that is apparently not done routinely.Suggest checking with Steve Turner at TWG for the latest word.

Last year on our way to Windhoek we had received our SAA boarding passes and were on our way upstairs to check our guns when the ticket agent chased us down and said our ammo would have to be checked separate.
You should have seen the look on his face when we opened our bags and handed him 3 locked ammo box's.
"no bribe for him". He got us 3 claim checks and shipped our ammo. We then went upstairs and a small tip got our guns cleared without opening the cases and we were on our way. Before boarding we had the agent check or claim stubs and verified everything was on the plane. Everything arrived in Windhoek with us.
