Is it acceptable to pack both my rifle and bow together in a hardside bow case ? If I fly from Huntsville to Atlanta and catch a flight to to JNB I assume I have to retrieve my gun and checked bag and recheck for the international flight... is this correct ? Thanks for any help... I flew directly from Atlanta to JNB with bow only last trip. Well, not completely sure about the gun/bow in the same case, but I don't see why not. I think the bigger issue, is a case that will hold the bow and the gun. Also, where you gonna put your arrows? I realize that arrows aren't ammo per se, but not sure what some numb nutz at checkin will say. I'd probably be more worried about the size/weigh of the case, and additional charges, than anything. BTW, you should be able to check all your stuff straight through to JNB, and not have to re do it in Atlanta. Good luck! Mad Dog

Thanks Mad Dog... I have a case which will hold a bow & arrows and a rifle, just want to make sure it is OK. Other replys are appreciated. Bring copies of the airline's own regs. w/you at check in....they usually don't even know their own regs or need "help" remembering. Print out the day of or the day before you leave. ghostB - I have carried a rifle and a bow in a Tuff Pak case numerous times to Africa with no problems whatsoever. Put the arrow case in the TP case also. It may push the 50# weight limit these days, I did it when it was 70#'s. Just check the case and all other bags straight through to JB. SAPS shouldn't care about the bow and rifle together as long as the rifle paperwork is in order. Good luck on your hunt. Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

There's no law or airline regulation that says you can't carry a rifle and a bow in the same case but as has been mentioned, most airline staff don't know their own regulations anyway and it's always a good idea to print their regs out just before you travel and keep them handy.

Thanks for the replies fellows. I will print a copy of Delta's regs just prior to departure and have in hand as suggested. I posted this because the regs are not real clear on this matter and could be interpreted in varous ways. Andy From Delta's baggage regs: Delta will accept firearms and shooting equipment packaged as follows: One gun case containing up to a total of four rifles or shotguns, plus shooting materials, and tools One gun case containing up to five handguns, one scope, and tools One bow and quiver of arrows and maintenance kit enclosed in a case or container of sufficient strength to protect the bow and quiver from accidental damage -------------------------------------------- National Rifle Association - Life Member National Wild Turkey Federation - Diamond Life Sponsor Pope & Young Club - Associate Member

I have carried both a bow and a rifle on Delta and SAA, just returning on SAA today. No problems having the two of them together at all.
