where NOT to stay in Maun

Recently spent a couple of nights in Maun. Booked at the Maun Safari Lodge online, got a confirmation for a room. A few days later they called me and told me that room was unavailable, however I could have an "executive" room for quite a bit more money. I felt that under the circumstances, they should have upgraded me and not asked for more money. When I stated my opinion, they cancelled my reservation.

I then found out there are only a couple of places to stay in Maun. I was able to get a room at the Sedia Motel, they confirmed the room and the rate by email. When I got there, they had never heard of me, and there were no rooms available. I had no option but to rent a "chalet" (2 br house) at twice the price. I didn't have a copy of the email with me, I was tired and hungty, so I just sucked it up. when I got back, I emailed asking them to credit the differenc in rates. I have heard nothing. So cross that one off the list as well. And for the record, this property should be called the Seedy Motel, it's rather rundown and sad, and overpriced to boot. This is where the bus tourists seem to stay in Maun.

That leaves Riley's. I wasn't able to get in there, they were fully booked. Probably because the place is AOK, but I can't say for sure.

We stayed at Riley's for one night (Sept.14) prior to flying home. Restaurant, bars on site and the hotel is very close to the airport.

Room was very clean and staff was friendly. Breakfast was included in the price.

For the record, the Sedia people have now agreed to credit my card with the difference between what they quoted me, and what they charged me when I pitched up

They did make it as right as they could. That is some consolation...
