I think you need to start 11-12 months in advance and book fast. Kathi booked my last trip on miles.

they can be used up to 1 year prior to flying and keep in mind that the farther out you book, the more likely a freq. flier seat is to be available. in 8 trips to Africa, i have flown every time on freq. flier miles- 1 first class, 6 business class and 1 miserable experience in coach. the only reason i flew coach once that was that i waited too late to make the reservation( still 5 months prior to travel) and couldn't get anything else. if you are traveling coach, you can book closer to departure date but once you get inside 3-4 months, chances are you are too late. incidently, i made all reservation myself directly with the airline on the phone for no extra charge- none of this $200-300 surcharge that travel agents lay on you. and it never took more than 30-45 minutes of my time. it ain't magic and it ain't rocket science and i will gladly spend 45 minutes or less of my time to save $200 plus. no offense to the travel agent posters here.

We used our Untied Miles to get from Phoenix to Frankfurt and back. We booked our flights in Nov 2007. Annelise DuBose from Gracy Travel made all of our arraignments.
We will find out how it all goes tomorrow morning.

seven:

My suggestion would be to personally call the relevant airlines freq. flyer line as far in advance as possible, say now for next July, and SERIOUSLY start bitching if you can't get booked 11 months in advance......being polite but disgruntled and expressing these feelings will often get results.....if the agent you're talking to says, "I can't do it.", ask for her supervisor, explain that you have ALL these miles and are seriously upset that you can't get on a flight 11 months in the future. No guarantees but I'm fairly confident it will work.

We didn't have a problem booking 3 round trip tickets to Windhoek next May on miles. We did this at the end of last month without any real trouble. Mom, Dad, and I combined all three of our miles to make it happen. Didn't seem like that big of a deal outside of the miles "transfer fee" and other assorted BS charges.

Just tried using my Delta FF miles for one RT to J'Burg. The proposed trip is two months out. They wanted 160,000 miles for a single seat. That is almost 3 times the standard mileage requirement.

Get used to that they are all broke and give out miles for nothing. I booked three BE in 07 for 08 for 120k each. Most like will never do that again. Was that for coach or BE? I would use them up they will only be worth less.

The first day available for North West is 352 out from your RETURN date and Delta is 331 days out from your RETURN Date. Just booked coach over and business return on NW via Amsterdam with miles.

Tradewinds,
It was for coach.

Fbull,
Thanks for the info. I'll probably book for next year so that may help.

Fbull..

Out of curiosity, how many miles did you have to use with a coach/business mix for travel? I'm getting ready to book for next August and that method sounds interesting.

To get the seats I wanted on BA to Harare, I used 250,000 miles per ticket for a RT ticket in business.

Bull1 - Sorry about late reply - have been out of touch lately. Coach was not available for the return flight so I booked business for an additional 30,000 miles for a total of 150,000 miles. I am now trying to get business class over but nothing available at this time. I am not sure how many additional miles this would be as they will not tell me until somthing opens up. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know anything about using Alaska Airlines miles? I would like to use them to go to Namibia in 2010. Thanks!
