This is an awsome site for folks planning a trip to Africa. I have booked a PG hunt to RSA in May 2011. I will take a Browning Abolt in 300WSM with Federal 180 Gr TSX as the primary rifle. Second rifle I would like to take a Ruger #1 in 300 H&H with hand loads.

Would the SAP consider these rifle to be of the same caliber?

Thanks in adavance for any info that you may provide. The Videos are awsome!!

Paul,

Welcome to the forum.

In theory both calibres you mention are .30 so yes, they should consider them the same calibre.

Not the word should!

You might also find www.shakariconnection.com useful in general and this: http://www.shakariconnection.c...ort-regulations.html in particular.

Hi ed, and welcome. After ten safaris, I strongly suggest you take only one rifle. I have made safaris with only my "golf club case", and a small ruck sack as carry-on. It's a joy to navigate the airports pulling the rolling case with one hand and having the other free.

Paul,

Dont take a chance that your rifle could be confiscated. Just take one rifle or two that are obviously different calibers.

Interesting. When we went last Sept., I took a .30-06 rifle and .308 Encore handgun with no issues. My hunting partner took a 300 Win. Mag. Encore rifle and .30-06 Encore handgun, again with no problems. Maybe it helped that we used a service to arrange the paperwork ahead of time?

Paul,
Welcome to the Forum…we are all envious that we are not also planning our first safari…enjoy the adventure you will never get another chance to plan safari #1.
Take the Ruger 300H&H…you are after all hunting in AFRICA….take a classic rifle, not one of those new fangled super manglaneums. Keep your logistics simple with one rifle and concentrate on the hunting, your shooting, the sights and sounds of Africa.
Good luck an keep us posted on your your hunt.

Paul - Do a quick check with your PH and see what 30 calibur rifles he has available and consider taking one of yours that matches one of his. In the slim chance something goes South with yours, use his and your supply of ammo. If you indeed can make a match, decision will then be simple.

Take the ruger no. 1, 300 H&H. You don't need 2 rifles[or the hassles]. Plus the 300 just screams "africa".

I was going to rake two rifles, but was told by numerous people to just take one. I am glad I listened to them. I didn't need to haul more stuff around. Take the one you can shoot the best and leave the other one home. You won't miss it.

Take the rifle you shoot the best. Take an extra scope alreadly set up for your rifle. If you have a rifle problem it will be the scope about 95% of the time. I also end up selling my extra scope, most of the time, for more than I paid for it. Usually to my PH as part/or all of his tip. Good scopes are hard to get in Africa.....Tom
