Layover in Frankfurt

Last year, I booked a room in the Sheraton the airport to rest in during the long layover before carrying on to Namibia. I do not want to to this this year.

I've heard of a lounge where one can take a shower, have something to eat and drink for a nominal charge. Is it the Delta lounge?

I read the same thing here in the past, Delta Lounge. I'd find out ahead of time.
We caught a cab to the zoo, ate on the "square" just outside the main gate of the zoo. We then walked around a bit and caught another cab back to the airport a few hours before our flight was to leave.

I've also read here that you can get a room at the airport hotel (Sheraton?) for a few hours. "Dayroom" I believe it was called.

Next time I go the wife and kids will be with me so cleaning up in Frankfurt will be mandatory, but no resting. That's what the plane ride to Windhoek is for.

The one time I went through Frankfurt I got a day room at the Holiday Inn (not Express). Comfortable and a decent restaurant. As I recall, it was a good bit cheaper than joining the Delta Crown room and napping in a bed beats a chair.

I purchased a day pass to the Sky Lounge. Very quite and clean with snacks, drinks, and internet access. Cost $40 for the day pass and $8 for a shower. Well worth the money.
They told us upon entry that we would could only stay until something like 4:00pm but they never did kick us out.

Were the drinks in the Sky Lounge alcoholic? What type of snacks were available?

For my wife and I to stay and have a shower at the Sky Lounge, the cost would be $96.00. A room at the Holiday Inn is about $150.00 and includes a couple of beds if one wants a nap.

I've done the Sheraton, directly across the street from the Airport, 3 times. It's pricey at $200USD, but in my mind worth it. Full hotel room, great F&B and room service if you want it. If you take the time to go to the transfer desk when you first arrive and get your boarding pass for the flight to Namibia, then you can stay in your hotel room until an hour before the flight, avoiding the long lines at the Air Namibia desk.

I agree. Your plane is typically going to land in Frankfurt during the mid-morning hours after an overnight flight from the U.S. or Canada, during which you hopefully slept at least a little. Your continuing flight won't depart until late evening.

Getting a day room and sleeping will just delay your adjustment to the time difference and keep you from sleeping on the long flight to Windhoek. Instead, check your hand luggage at the facility in the airport and hop the train to downtown Frankfurt where you can shop, eat fine German sausages, and have some great local beer. After doing this, our party landed the next morning in Windhoek fully adjusted to the time and ready to put in half-day of ground travel followed by a half-day of hunting. No precious time wasted on "jet lag".

Take a 20 minute train to Mainz. The Cathedrals are worth the ride and its a short walk from the train station. There is lots to look at and it feels good to stretch the legs after being stuck on the plane. Forget the the day room, you can sleep on the plane.

The main thing I will be looking for when I layover in Frankfurt this summer is a nice hot shower after being crammed in the plane all night. We are looking at getting a room in a hotel just to have a place to shower and clean up. We plan on sight seeing during the day. I have a terrible time sleeping on a plance but I bet by the last leg to Windhoek if I have been going at it all day I crash,, and yes I have tried all the sleep aids, I am just a light sleeper and planes don't cut it for me. Yes, the sight seeing will envolve "sausages and beer'!!!

drwes: You better look out. An old boy from "Mahayer" can get plumb lost in Frankfurt, not to mention Africa! Be sure to leave a trail of bread crumbs so you can find your way back to the airport. If I hadn't had my 31 year-old son with me to show me where to go and what to do I'd probably be wandering around Frankfurt airport today panhandling for food.

yep,, been lost all over Frankfurt before,, those guys don't know that you are supposed to lay out streets that run east- west,, north-south!!! Some run one-way this way,, and suddenly are one-way the other! Their rail system can get you around pretty good but I found it in the long run better to hire a driver for the day who speaks some english and have him haul my lost butt around,, get to see a lot more as well. When you are spending what you are spending on a hunt,, to try and do it cheap on one part makes no sense.. Just pictue a country boy over 6 feet and 230 from Mexia who normally drives a one-tone long wheel base 4X4 driving in Frankfurt, a ford fiesta deisel shift, I filled up the front seat, with a map written in German, with your wife going,, honey,,ask directions,Ha! couldn't understand the directions if I asked. Lost! Absolutely ,,,The true meaning of..... LOST! I will hire a driver.
