Gun storage - Transit
Let's say I'm traveling with my own rifle before or after a safari. And for example, I'm spending the night at either the Hilton in Windhoek or the Intercontinental at the JNB airport.

Are there any restrictions on keeping my gun with me at those hotels?

None at intercontinental JNB as long as you have a SAPS permit.

Most RSA hotels will store your rifle case in their safe or safe room and will allow you to inspect the holding area. Always safer than keeping it in your room. I have done both many times and prefer the hotel safe.

Do yourself a favor and stay at Casa Piccolo in Windhoek rather than someplace generic like the Hilton. The better B&B's have safes available.

Excellent choice and they have a gun safe.

All good advise.

If traveling to say TAnzania via So. Africa, and have a over night or longer lay over African customs Joberg will store your rifle and you can pick it up and recheck it to Tanzania, at a later date.

I got to So. Africa and gun didn't make it, I got a receipt and did my African business that took a week..Needed to leave on a Sunday, and they had kept my paper work, they contacted the guy that kept my paper work and passport, and they gave me his tel number. He was somekind of a boss, I called him and he came to the airport on his day off and took care of me and sent my on my way..I tipped him a $100. and was more than grateful..

They are by nature a helpful people but you must never exhibit any signs of frustration or get ugly or you will never get anything done, Its Africa and it is what it is,frustrating, but funny..go with the flow.
