To whom it may concern, 12 September 2007 TRANSPORTATION OF FIREARMS BY AIRLINK In the past, SA Airlink has been able to:  Transport Firearms; i.e. various types of handguns, shotguns, rifles and hand machine carbines to our destinations in South Africa.  We have also transported firearms from international destinations in transit to other international destinations where such firearms did not enter the country.  We have been able to transport firearms from international destinations, to destinations in S.A. and then re- booked for transportation to the original destination, or to other international destinations, provided the correct channels were followed and the correct import and export documents are available. Due to changes in legislation, very stringent measures are in place to control ownership, handling, use and transportation of firearms. In brief; persons, other than the licensed owner of a firearm, must undergo statutory training and certification before they may handle and transport firearms. (Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000). Airlink does not have personnel who may legally handle firearms at all our stations. We have also not been able to obtain the services of certified security companies who can carry out this function for us. As result of the above-mentioned, Airlink has been forced to re-evaluate its policy regarding the transportation of firearms. Regrettably, we have decided that it is not viable to continue with the full-scale transportation of firearms to and from all our destinations. We recognise however that the hunting industry, a valuable tourist attraction and economic factor, is an important user of our Airline. We will thus attempt to accommodate hunters by transporting their rifles to those destinations where they legally be handled. With effect from 1 November 2007, Airlink will no longer transport firearms other than hunting rifles. Hunting rifles shall only be transported to and from the following destinations: OR Tambo International, Johannesburg Cape Town Durban Port Elizabeth Kimberly Polokwane Phalaborwa Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, Nelspruit Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." | ||
