I am flying Delta Atlanta to JoBurb, spending the night there and then on SAA to Bulawayo. Wiil this work- Put my ammo (60 rounds 375 HH) in a TSA locked pelican case "inside" my nalpak with my rifle on the Atlanta to JoBurg leg. Then take the pelican/Ammo out and check it as separate luggage on the SAA leg to Bulawayo? I have learned a ton on this site and appreciate all the help. Thanks NRA Patron member

Anybody?? I am trying put my ammo in my nalpak to avoid a third checked bag from Minneapolis to Atlanta to JoBurg. Seems like that is one less thing that might get lost. Would like your knowledge on this. NRA Patron member

A few weeks ago Delta reps asked several times if our ammo was packed in a separate suitcase. I would look a Delta's rules and reg's.

DF, you are absolutely right. Just a few weeks ago we did this exact same routine. Be sure and check the ammo in a locked box separately on any South African Airways flight. For Delta you can check the locked box in your checked baggage. We just pulled the locked box with ammo out when we got to Joberg to connect on our South African Airways flight. SAA wants the ammo checked separate from luggage.

DF, clarification on my last post. You cannot check the ammo in with your rifle concerning Delta. It must be checked in your separate checked baggage. Sorry, misread your post.

Below are the rules for carrying ammuntion on SAA flights. I just copied them from the SAA website. When I fly from Washington, Dulles to Harare, Zimbabwe, my ammo is in a small, hard sided, lockable Americase that I keep inside my duffle with my clothes. I have never taken this Americase out and checked it separately as described above. Packing this way seems to be consistent with the SAA policy below. Mangwana Ammunition - A maximum of 5kg securely boxed ammunition per passenger will be permitted for carriage either as a separate piece of baggage or within checked baggage in the hold of the aircraft. Screening authorities may however delay baggage containing ammunition, if such ammunition was not declared at check-in and is therefore not marked with an appropriate tag indicating that such ammunition was already security inspected.

Unless Delta has changed its rules very recently, ammunition may be carried in the same case as the rifle(s). TSA regulations allow ammunition in the same case as the rifle. Some airlines (SAA) do not. Airline personnel will frequently say that their rules do not allow guns and ammunition together, even when such rules make no mention of such prohibition. Then they will inaccurately cite TSA regulations, which also specifically allow them together. As with any agent of any carrier, getting them to abide by their own rules depends on who you get and how well or poorly informed they are. It once took me four sequentially higher levels of supervisors at the central post office in a city of one million people to find out that I really could send a rifle through the mail, after all!

I've traveled several times on both Delta and SAA. Often a combination of the two while continuing on to Zim. I've never had to check the ammo separately in it's own locked box on either airline. I always do put the ammo in it's own locked box, and placed inside my duffle with clothes and other gear, just in case I'm asked to check it separately, but this hasn't happened yet with Delta or SAA. The only time I've been asked to separate the ammo into it's own locked box, and checked as a third bag, was in 2006 while returning from JoBerg on Iberia to Madrid, Madrid to Mia, then Mia to DFW on American. As soon as we got back to MIA, the ammo box went back into the duffle.
