So as not to hijack recent thread on lusaka travel, i will start new thread
It look like only 1 hour 20 minute layover on way in. Is this enough? Does luggage usually make the trip?
On return there is only one option and that has 19 hour layover. Do you lewve airport and get a room? How is this handled?
We will be hunting muchinga. Can we charter from lusaka direct?

If you are hunting with Muchinga, Laura DuPloy of Muchinga can give you all the answers as well as make charter arrangements.

If Emirates flies out of Dulles and that is the airline you are considering (or really any airline) a 1 1/2 hour connection would not be my choice. If you are traveling with your own rifle, definitely not enough time. Best to use one of the travel agents used by many on this forum: Kathi Klimes "Wild Travels", Gracy Travel Agency or Travel With Guns. Even if you are not traveling with firearms all these folks know the best routes and ins & outs of African travel.

A 19 hour layover in Dubai gives you time to go to a hotel Emirates will most likely provide and get a shower and rest. Can do some excellent shopping or quick sight seeing.

You'll have a great time!

I was wondering about doing the long layover in Dubai. Can you leave the airport? Do they have a secure vault for weapon storage?

My son and I had a 19 hour layover in Dubai 3 months ago after our trip to Zimbabwe. We arranged some local city tours through their affiliate, Arabian Adventures. It’s located in the baggage claim area and is easy to find & their associates are very knowledgeable and helpful. It’s well worth taking the time to see the city, and leaving/returning to the airport/security is very quick. We used a camp rifle so can’t advise on the firearm, but assume it would be checked through to your final U.S. destination.

Will Emirates provide the free hotel room for us poor folks flying in coach?

I think they do (or did) if your layover was your only connection, but check with your travel agent or Emirates!

Also I presume if your 19 hr layover was your only option and connection all your luggage and firearms will remain checked through.

has anyone actually done the 1 hour and 20 minute layover?? Good, bad?? I generally like to roll on when In traveling so an hour and 20 minutes sounds good to me. However I also know all about airlines and travel and don'y want to be in such a hurry that it is a stressful mess?? Thoughts anyone?

Based on my experience in October flying from JFK to Dubai, an hour and 20 minutes is not enough. Basically we landed at a normal gate and walked a long way, exited security and then went back through security, only to walk a lot further to get to our gate. (It is so far that Emirates has someone escort you so you don't get lost). Upon arrival at the gate you then board a bus, drive a mile or so to your plane out on the tarmac and enter the plane there.

Good luck!

There is defiantly a lot of walking In the Dubai airport . I have made the trip through Dubai 4 times from SFO generally on the out bound leg I over nighted at Emirates hotel on their dime great food great way to break up trip . On one trip I stayed overnight and one day saw the sights to include helicopter ride and guided tour of the city. Emirates took care of my fire arm no problem . I think that 1 hour 20 min is a little tight for my comfort level especially with firearms. used Travel with Guns they were great .

In most large international airports, I would never assume 1’20 was enough to make an connection. You MIGHT make it but I bet your luggage wouldn’t. All gulf states airports( and I flown through Dubai, Abu Dabi, and Doha), require you to go through security between flights, even though you never leave a “secured” area.

You are absolutely right, as most require you to change terminal.

I normally look at 2 hours as a minimum transfer time.
