Just be aware that if you have a short domestic flight prior to your international, it may be on a small plane. Often if your carry on is too large, they will make you "gate check" it so pack well.

Someone on AR 7 or 8 years ago before my first trip advised me to get a good back pack for meds, binos, camera, etc. so both hands would be free for gun case and duffel. Some of the best advice I received on AR (and I received a LOT). Bought a Patagonia backpack that is set up to be used as a carryon. One trip my duffel was slightly overweight so I was able to shift a pair of boots from it to the backpack and avoid overcharges. Unless you overpack it, it will still fit under the seat of a commuter plane. I have put binos in the Tuffpak (well wrapped in clothes, of course) but prefer to carry them on.

Agreed...that is how I travel too.

Last year coming out of Bulawayo...I hassled for being like a 1/2 a kilo overweight with my duffle...even though it came at the exact same weight with no issue.

Anyway...just trying to pack so that my duffle is slightly under.

PS

Thanks all for replies. Someone once told me they were hassled for an optic in a carry-on but may have been a rifle scope.

.

Just flew Lufthansa Dusseldorf to Frankfurt to Johannesburg and return. 2 sets of binos and a Swaro scope in my rucksack. No hassle at all.

have not seen/heard of issues with binoculars.

With respect to rifle scopes-

It had been an intermittent problem in the past-
US fixed it in '13
some overseas outfits may still give you a hassle now and again-

I have carried my electronics and expensive binos in a PacSafe backpack for 9 out of 13 safaris. Wouldn't travel any other way. The PacSafe backpack is cut proof and has a recessed zipper making it fairly difficult to breach. It also has an inner cut proof 'safe' bag that can be locked and further secured. tu2

My binocs and rangefinder are always in my carry on when flying. Them and similar items are too easy to sell after stolen by TSA people.

Why not just pack the binoculars in the rifle case? Why lug around the extra weight/bulk in a carry on if you don't have to? Am I missing something?

A carry-on doesn't get weighed. Mine probably weighs 50 lbs. I put anything of Value in mine. Drone,Camera equipment,Binoculars, rangefinder etc. It's piece of mind from the thieves at the Airports.

Simple: To prevent theft. Same answer as to all other electronic devices in your carry on, including those you may use on the flight.

I've had mine weighed on many flights. It really depends on the airline. Travel enough and you will have it weighed! I've been weighed on Air New Zealand, Quantas, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa to name a few.

Still wondering what I am missing here. Rifle case is locked with locks that only the owner has keys to - no shared TSA locks here. Am I to believe that someone would cut the master locks off a rifle case on a fishing expedition to see what else was in the case worthy of pilfery? I have been travelling with sundry other items including binoculars, spare scope, rangefinder, leatherman, and cleaning kit in the locked rifle case without any further thought. I sure don't miss carrying that stuff in my carry on. I may be naive but I would think the minute a rifle case is detected with locks cut off a lot of official attention would be directed to the chain of custody for that registered item. Is this a feel good kind of exercise or is there some merit that I am unable to grasp at this point?

I have personally had a number of items stolen in Johannesburg from checked luggage when it has been locked or had locks on it. Some locks were picked. I made a claim against the airlines (SAA) and the airport which was a total waste of time. I also do not care to expose my electronics and expensive binoculars to the baggage gorillas who have been known to even break rifle stocks in their handling of gun cases. To each their own, but I will continue to pack all of my electronics and expensive binoculars (Swarovski and Leica rangefinding binos) in my carry on. On a rifle case, that is why I use the TuffPak with the vendor lock-can't be picked. That is also why I went to Samsonite hard sided luggage with built in locks and with no zippers and other means of getting into the luggage. That is why I also use a PackSafe backpack that is cut proof and contains a inner cut proof 'safe' bag. Just my preferences on having lost two brand new and expensive cameras and other items to the African thieves.

In the U.S., carryons never seem to get weighed but I've seen carryons weighed and dimension checked numerous times overseas.

Just after you enter the passenger only side of international departures at Auckland they have a girl standing next to a dimension check and scale, right before security screening just to check carryons. I've seen people pulled out of the security line at quite a few European airports to get their carryons weighed. I've had my carryon weighed at ticketing more than a few times in foreign international airports.

Years ago I used to have mine weighed quite often in Joburg. So I started wearing a travel vest with loads of pockets so I could take things out and meet the weight limit. Once on the plane they went back into my carry-on. Big Grin

I landed in Harare two days ago. Binocs in my carryon did not raise any questions on this trip nor any other. I wear a travel vest to separate all the little items I need on the long flights so I don't have to pick through my carryon.
Very smooth flight--no cock ups.
The only time eyebrows were raised was when when my gun case was examined in Jo'Burg and when my gun case and checked bag were opened in Harare. I was carrying a dozen stuffed animals and several big bags of M&Ms for the kids I see. Although in Anchorage when I opened my case to put in the firearms declaration card, a middle aged old hag looked at me and said (about the stuffies), "Are those the animals you plan to kill?". I said, "Yes. I gut shoot to save ammunition." She was a nosey old fossil but her diamonds could have bought me a few more doubles! Should have invited her on the trip.
Cheers,
Cal

Yes, always carry-on your optics. I carry-on binos, spotting scopes all the time. Don't want them getting broken or stolen.
