Looking for something not too expensive, but rugged, with wheels and having an "adventure" look to it. Suggestions?

My favorite carry on for many years is the Patagonia MLC [Maximum Legal Carry on].

It does not have wheels, but it does have good back straps that "dissapear" when you do not need them.

That way I can carry it on my back, and handle my other one or two pieces of checked baggage.

I'll second the vote for Filson but inexpensive it is not. However, my Filson luggage has lasted me for years and has traveled from Alaska to Zimbabwe! I guess if you look at the cost vs. the expeditions they have been on and the way they have held up to the baggage apes, they are a good buy. And nothing screams SPORTSMAN like a well-used piece of Filson gear.

I have to agree with Russell and Vaughan. I use my Filson for all my trps hunting or not. I've actually had people comment the character of my luggage. It looks like shit but it continues to be of good service. Sadie has L.L. Bean luggage and it too has served well but it looks more like backpacker stuff.

Someone gave me a Red Ox "pack".I use the word pack loosely. It is basically a carry on with straps to carry it with. It is the maximum size. It has several pockets for use.

I love the thing. It is a great carry on. It is great to take, for example, in the truck in Africa. I throw the things I might need in it and don't worry about it after that. It has plenty of room. It is easy to use. It is easy to clean. It is not expensive.

I leave tomorrow for 10 days of bird shooting in Argentina. It will be in the field with me for every shoot.

Foe whatever it is worth, I have seen Craig Boddington with the exact same pack on TV.

+1 on the Filson.
I prefer the large carry on. Works good and looks the part in Africa or The Yukon.
Expensive, but your grand kids, kids can you use it when your long gone.

Another vote for Filson. Have used their luggage for years.

Great customer service too. Had a rolling duffle damaged on a safari to Zambia where it was soaked with diesel in the back of the truck while going out. 21 days later I used duct tape to wrap up the area where the canvas was rotting and make it home. Called Filson and sent them the bag. A brand new bag arrived shortly thereafter, at no charge. The heavy brass zippers are not susceptible to the forced opening of nylon self-repairing zippers found on most of todays bags.

"Filson. Might as well have the best."

I have several pieces of Filson luggage that I have used as checked baggage, and also just when traveling by vehicle.

I agree it is great stuff.

Stanley tool box. You can pick one up at Lowe's or Home Depot. They are about $60.00 and perfectly hold about 50lbs of travel kit. Hard plastic with wheels with several places for locks. Mine traveled all over Zim and RSA for 5 months in 2010. It survived plances, trains, buses and automobiles of all sorts...
Best of luck,
Brian

I travel all over Europe and Africa for a living (tough job this!). I use Cabela's Outback. Good looking, tough as nails. Might be a little heavy but at least it survives.

Never used Filson but it looks good. I have some of their Tin Cloth clothing and its great. Red Ox looks good too. One thing I HIGHLY recommend from them are the cable locks. They really do the job of keeping the baggage monkeys out of your bags!

I use a simple, inexpensive nylon rucksack. It holds my optics, toiletries, reading materials, etc. and leaves my hands free to pull my SKB golf club pack, which holds my rifle, boots and clothing. Been using this system for 15 years.

I second the motion for Eagle Creek -- I have one that has a seperate (zip off) bag that carries my magazines and stuff -- main part goes in the overhead and the zip off portion to my seat.

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

I like filson stuff but do not use the wheeled luggage at all. I use the Pullman bag for most of my travel and usually get it in the overhead bin with two weeks of clothes in it. Good stuff there.

I have a Filson pullman and a Filson rucksack. I love them as they are just the right size to enable me to avoid checking bags at all anymore. These two pieces are fine for 2-3 weeks of travel and I am going to be stretching them to one month duty in August. Buy Filson....worth every penny.

Scott,

I bought a Red Ox before our last hunt. It serves me very well. I use it quite a bit when traveling here in the states. Especially if I am packing for a overnight trip.

I'll second the positive reviews of Red Oxx. I just took one of their little carry on bags to Africa and back and out in the field every day and have no complaints whatsoever. For me, it was the perfect size for what I want to carry on - a simple change of socks, underwear and shirt, a small video camera, my little point and shoot still camera, an iPod, a pack of gum, my newly beloved Kindle, a paperback (for when I can't use electronics on the plane), a bottle of water, my journal and some pens. I also managed to get my MacBook Air in there as well - my regular Dell laptop won't fit but the Air went in just fine and was a better choice for a trip like this anyway. That whole package took up only about half the space under the seat in front of me on each flight.

However, a smaller carry-on forced me to check my larger SLR camera and my binos - two items that in the past I have carried on in a backpack but were too big for this little carry on. I am happy to report that both the big camera and the binos survived Chicago-Washington-Joburg-Lusaka-Mfuwe-Fulara and back with no problems whatsoever.
