Icy weather grips the country

Johannesburg - A cold wind blew through most parts of South Africa on Monday with temperatures as low as -6ºC recorded in Williston in the Northern Cape and winds in the upper 60km/h blowing along the country's east coast.

As paparazzi snapped holidaymakers frolicking in their skimpy bikinis on beaches and yachts in Europe, South Africans were digging deep into their cupboards for warm coats and beanies and plotting the evening's soup supper.

WeatherSA's predictions for the Eastern Cape were "very cold with snow", "very cold" for the Free State, "very cold with snow and gales" for KwaZulu-Natal, and also "very cold" for Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Five mountain passes in the Eastern Cape were closed due mainly to rainy weather which made the roads slippery, Arrive Alive said.

The affected passes were the R67 between Fort Beaufort and Grahamstown, as well as between Seymour and Whittlesea.

The N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg, the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock, together with the route between Barkly East and Elliot were also closed.

Flu season may also be upon with us with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases bracketing July 12 to 18 as one of the potential weeks for onset of the illness.

They advised people to cough into a tissue then throw it away and wash their hands afterwards.

If the symptoms did not improve, a visit to the doctor was recommended.

I received emails from friends last night telling me to pack warm clothing so it must be chilly. I will know in about 48hrs.

-6C? That's about where we switch from short sleeves to long sleeves in Minneapolis. Jackets come out several degrees lower.

It was down to 2C by the time I went to bed last night...... FAR too cold for this particular rooinek!

Low in Houston, Texas today forcast to be 76 F or 24.4 C. It should be 96 F or 35.5 C for a high.

Now those are some good African Hunting Temperatures!

all I've got to say about that is you lucky bastard!

Although as I remember, Texas can also get helluva cold!

Supposed to top out at 101 F here in SW Idaho today.

I am comfortably ensconced in my LazyBoy recliner with Buzz Charlton and Craig Boddington videos at my side. And my last bottle of Amarula...

it's OK in coffee in the am instead of cream and sugar. single malt is better but people look at you funny when you start drinking single malt that early in the day

Amarula is just far too sweet for me I'm afraid although I can see the logic in putting it in coffee.

I guess it'd be OK poured into a BBQd banana as well.

Getting back to the weather today was just 1C at 0700 and everything covered in a heavy frost here in White River. (Or more accurately, just outside White River)
