I opted out of getting travel insurance for a safari slated for August 7-17 with Blaauwkrantz/The Rudmans. Didn't bite in the time frame quoted. Anyhow, a month ahead of the safari I've just had double aortic-coronary heart bypass surgery. Tickets, though non-refundable can be issued for a new trip date (October??) at a $350 fee.

So, against a $14K trip with Pamela, the "miss" on trip insurance quote of $222. already has cost more than the insurance. We will NOT pass on Travel Guard AIG for the October run.

It will be interesting to see what the new health issue does to your insurance premium.

Good advice and hope you're recovering well from having your chest cracked open.

Stub,

I don’t believe it will have any effect in regards to what he is referring to as TravelGuard is a separate policy just for your trip. You buy it when you book your trip and it expires once the trip is over.

Sevens....The travel insurance policies I have purchased for hunting / fishing trips (four over the last five years) all had a question or two regarding current health issues. I don't know for sure what effect answers to those questions might have as I am fortunate enough not to have anything along those lines.

You get the g.i. and urinary tracks back first week, then try to think with all the new meds as you heal. My progress would be graphed as a 45 degree line, methinks. First doctor follow-up is a week away. Thanks to all!

Green light from surgeon, so -- in rebooking flights I am finding out that 350 is per ticket.

That's 700 bucks more and the trip insurance would have really been a good idea No complaints, even if the cardiologist nixes shooting for me.

Tried one shot with her .270 Wby during her own sticks practice session (early September). No problems. Seven shots yesterday with my 7mm Wby and no problems this morning. Flew to Arizona and back last week, Thursday and Friday. No physical issues and cardio rehab is moving along swimmingly. October's safari will be just fine.

One week left...First Lariam in eleven years and -- might not work this time (Oct 2018.) No malaria near Port Elizabeth, but Jo'berg overnight and Senegal refuel point might have it.
Heart / blood pressure meds are now part of the mix -- not a factor during three earlier trips. Haven't researched doxy or malarone, but they are likely problematic.
Ambien is and has been part of the mix, but I never reacted before like today. Oh, well.

Cutting metaprolol dose in half seems to have solved a bunch of issues. Pics when we return (around Halloween.)

BNagel,

Have fun and I applaud you for erring on the side of caution with the malaria prophylactic. I use it and recommend it for every client going anywhere on safari.

Nice old stallion. See the triangle?

Female baboon. Those are / used to be blood oranges.

Revenge for interfering in zebra hunt. Never get on Pamela's bad list!

Male Chacma baboon, next day. Heard about the oranges, but not the lady.

Seven shots after me, one from her. (Face palm.)

(Still waiting for mine. He turned into a blue wildebeest we're still hoping to find. Post-op meds really messed with my recall, emotions and sight.)
