Easy 4457 question…

I should already know this but don’t want to be wrong.

Last fall, I took my .338 & .416 rifles on safari. I had both listed on a single 4457, which is how I’ve always done it. My question is, what if I had a single rifle listed on each 4457? In other words, one for my 416, another for my 338 and yet another for my 264. This would enable me to take whichever rifle I decide without having to get an updated 4457. I’d then just provide whichever 4457’s the airlines need for what I decide to take.

Or, do I have to carry a single 4457 for all rifles taken? I’m asking because I’m waiting to see how my year plays out and may grab a last minute late season hunt. Not sure for what or where I’ll be hunting yet. Not sure which rifle I’d be taking, so I thought a separate form for each rifle may be the way to go.

What’s the concensus?

Dan,

I have not travelled in a while but I can see advantages to having them separated. Also, you have knuckleheads in foreign countries who A) want to see the date of the form not being expired: i.e, on a corner of the form it will have an expiration date for the form itself even though from an inbound US custom's perspective the validation that you possessed it in the US never expires and B) you may have knuckleheads overseas who want to see a stamp within the current year.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Personally, I put each rifle on a separate 4457. Easiest way to handle for me.

Me also. Although the Model 70, 375 always goes to Africa with me, I have other guns listed on other 4457s

Thanks for confirming how you do it. I think I’m going to get a separate 4457 for each rifle going forward.

just got a 4457 filled out for an up and coming trip this August, putting 2 Rifles on the Form. Asked the same question If I go on a trip and take only one of the Rifles listed do I need a new Form? His answer was "No", I asked if some over zealous CBP agent would think I sold a rifle he answered in the Negative .....
CBP is only an hour away so I Still think it is better to be Safe than Sorry and have the Rifles on your Trip on the Form or Individual Forms for each

FYI:

I've had agents give me a hard time about having things on the 4457 that I am not returning with.best to keep it simple for them.

Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

I’ve never had issues with more than one on a form, and not bringing one of them.

I do think this foreign requirement is for the birds, and the local customs guys agree… I’ve been asked why I’m getting new ones when I’ve got the old ones, they don’t expire- and when I tell them why, they state “that isn’t what that form is for, but whatever.”

I’ve offered a carry permit as proof of owning firearms legally, but South Africa apparently insists bureaucratically that the only acceptable form is the customs one…

Yes you can do it either way...Keep in mind that a 4457 is nothing more than a US Customs receipt proving that you purchased the item in the USA and not in Africa..It can apply to many objects such as cameras rings and etc and a good idea on anything of value..Through the years it been used more or less illegally by foreign as proof of ownership, but I wouldn't question that to anyone of authority in Africa, just go with the flow.

Not required to put only one rifle on each form, but I do agree that it's best practice to do so.

Just keeps things simpler and more straightforward.

I use separate forms for each rifle for the reasons listed and have never had a problem even when I took two rifles.

Keep in mind that there are CBP agents who make up regulations as they go along. When I was returning from Namibia through Detroit in 2013 I presented my Winchester Model 70 topped by a Leupold Vari-X III along with my 4457 for it. The arrogant agent asked where the 4457 for the scope was, since “They’re made in Germany”. I showed him the “Made in USA” stamp on the scope and then I showed him the Leupold website where it said “Proudly designed, manufactured and marketed in Oregon “. I asked him where in Germany is Oregon located?” A small number of CBP agents are on power trips and you have to be prepared to call them on their BS.
