OK ... we gotta have a "lockable" metal box to put the ammo in. Do we actually lock the box containing ammo in the check luggage?

Is this going to cause American authorities some heartburn?

Had my Storm case locked both directions. In US TSA or SAA never looked or inqured. In Johannesburg SAPS or SAA never looked. In East London SAPS never looked on way over.

In East London SAA asked us to remove the ammo box and check it seperately. Two hunting companions had metal cash boxes and were concerned about survieablitity. I wasn't with a Hardigg Storm Case. In Johannesburg we received our ammo and guncases and moved them through the airport ourselves. I really wonder if anyone at SAA or SAPS has realized that folks are walking around the airport with guns in locked cases and ammo out and somewhat readily available due to this new take it out of checked luggage policy? Not all ammo cases are locked just check the discussions here. Seems to me that it'd be safer locked in checked luggage. All the same it made it home as seperate checked luggage from the Johannesburg SAPS office once we left it there.

Mike have fun. I'm a Tech Grad (down 60 from you) and just got back last week.

Well, I have made my decision after buying so many damn locks I now have an overweight problem! My ammo is going in a "lockable" but unlocked pelican double pistol case w/two TSA locks inside the case. The duffel in which the ammo will ride is going to be locked with a small Master key/lock with a spare lock inside the duffel. Thirdly, my double rifle browning/pelican case will have two Master key/lock locks LOCKED on the outside with two TSA spare on the inside.

As of this date that is my plan! It may change many times between here and Bulawayo and back. Time will tell.

A friend of mind just returned from a SA hunt. He told me he had no problems getting to SA but did have quite a time on the Return with his rifles and AMMO. I do not have all the details but I expect that he had the AMMO in his gun case. He said it was all worked out in the end but it caused him quite the problem. Once I have all the details I will post them. Its looking like the smart thing to do is to shoot all your ammo before you leave!

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! 'What the hell could possibly go wrong?'

Oh My! They want a case that can be shipped separately as a piece of luggage????

What a PITA!!!!

Have a double pistol case into which the steel box would fit, but now need to find TSA locks that are long enough to work on it. Sheesh ... is ALWAYS something!!!

Last year on my trip to RSA I used a cheap plastic Plano tacklebox to hold my ammo. On the return flight back on SAA they made my partner and me take the boxes out, lock them up with a TSA lock and send it as a seperate piece of luggage. Somehow they made it to Dulles with our bags. In the customs line we put the boxes back into our suitcases and sent them through with no problems.
