Any "Do not miss" attractions for the area of Johannesburg? As it is, I will have a day to see the sights in that area. Spending 2 nights prior to heading to Zim.

Many Thanks

Be mindful of your surroundings. IMO, your JNB layover is the most dangerous part of your trip. Bad things can happen there.

Brett, I have an agent there that reps us and if you need some help to arrange some things let me know. Knowing you I assume you do not golf but he is regularly at Benoni Golf Club. As to what I know about J'burg there is just not much there to see. First day is a rest up and if all your stuff shows up on time I would try to get an early flight to Zim. More people to see there. Where are you flying into, Harare or Bulawayo?

Lets shoot the doubles before you leave.

Good luck Brett. Be careful in Johannesburg. It is a dangerous place.

There is a chain of really good seafood restaurants. I believe they are called Sea Basket or something like that. I recommend you go and have the giant Mozambican tiger prawns. They are absolutely delicious .

Personally , I have never done much in Jo'berg . However, not all that far out of town are some interesting places. There are a couple of lion exhibits that are interesting. There is a town with a massive outdoor bazaar. It is fun to go to. Plus it has a lot of good stuff at good prices. Be prepared to negotiate. These are on the way to Sun City.

If i were in your shoes, I would try and arrange a day of bird shooting. Pretty good shooting there.

Will,
Thanks for the reply, and I hear what you are saying.

Larry,
Harare and overnight at Duckworth's place then on to camp in the morning.

Hope to get together with you and Bal for a double shoot this spring. I'll call you, as you know I should be in your area for some of my kids games.
Many Thanks

Brett

Larry Shores,

Thanks, I really appreciate all you guys help.
I ran into Sean Kelly at SCI and he may be between hunts, so we may get into something.
Sean mentioned (Cabanos and Sons), I may not have the right spelling.

Many Thanks

Brett

PS I got the Argentina DVD, but haven't got to watch it yet.

Brett, I would not discount Larrys idea of a day of bird shooting. I think the time you are there the bird shooting is getting really good if I remember it right. You can get some awsome pigeon shoots there.

Shooting 100 doves/pigeons in a single afternoon isn't all that hard.

Larry,

100 doves, "not hard" you haven't seen me shoot. Ha Ha I haven't shot doves for years , but when I did 1 for 2 was a good day. Love the idea though.

Many Thanks
Brett

i have taken a couple of days to rest in joburg on 2 or 3 occassions before moving on to other venues. each time i arranged for a private shopping tour of the city thru the b&b where i was staying. this consisted of a guy with a minivan who knew the city. cost was a couple hundred bucks and proved a great way to spend 7 or 8 hours. the drivers knew all the best places for curios and whatever else you wanted to shop for and made great suggestions about places to see as well as local restaurants. the last trip included a 2 night stay at africa sky guest house. they recommended a guide and set it all up. he was great and very knowledgable. both the wife and i enjoyed that day. always felt safe BUT we did it in the daylight.

Your time available isn't really long enough to do a hell of a lot except get bored..... There's virtually nothing worth seeing in Jo'burg itself and has been said, it's a real toilet.

If you had a bit more time, you could come up the Lowveld or go down to look at one of the KZN parks but you're just too short of time to do that.

I reckon Larry has given you what's going to be one of the best ideas. tu2

Hi there
My wife and I spent two nights at Afton house in Aug./08 prior to going to KNP and then Cruiser Safaris. Through Afton house we booked a 1/2 day trip to the caves at Sterkfontein, followed by the afternoon at the Cullinan diamond mine. Driver of the van ( we were the only ones in it) handed us off to group tour at the caves, and to a guide at the mine( it was just us and the guide)
The caves were interesting, both the tour through and the interpretive centre on top. The mine, was OK, the jewelry shop at the end of the tour was an eye opener. Fortunately my wife agreed there was nothing of interest in there. (A jewelry shop in airport had some Tanzanite items that came home, though.)
