Since I have to travel in East Africa on business from time to time, I get stuck in Nairobi over the weekend fairly frequently. Nairobi National Park gets old pretty fast, so yesterday and today I followed a friend's suggestion and went to Lake Nakuru National Park which is a two to three hour drive from Nairobi. It is mostly known for its flamingos but the place is full of white rhino (and one or two black rhino), waterbuck, buffalo and your usual assortment of plains game. A very nice alternative to downtown Nairobi.

All photos with a Nikon D90 with 18-200mm lens.

Great pictures and beautiful country. Would have been very neat to have hunted there forty years ago.

Spent an overnight there in the original Russian built hotel back in 1995. Worst bed I've ever paid for, but the view from the window was absolutely incredible!

It's a regular photobucket account. Would they look better with a pro account?

The zebra have an almost brownish or reddish tinge to the stripes. Is that a true rendition of the color, and if so, are they a different sub species?

I don't think the almost reddish tinge on the back of the zebra is due to any color shift in the photograph, and I didn't do any color enhancing before posting the picture on photobucket. What I have noticed however, after taking a look at a bunch of other zebra pictures I have taken over the years, is that zebra like to take a dust bath from time to time in which they roll onto their back and twist and turn, much a like a dog does to scratch its back. This leaves them with a dirty, dusty back which can often show up as a brownish or reddish tinge depending on the dirt.

jb, I think the compression software on photobucket is part of the problem. So I circumvent that by compressing the photos first before doing the photobucket upload. In other words, if I have a good RAW file I save a copy with an image size of 1024 pixels on the longest dimension (using Nikon Capture NX2 or Gimp or similar). Then I select the upload option of 1024 pixels on photobucket which means that in fact photobucket does not need to do any compressing. This seems to give better results and probably means I don't need the photobucket pro option to get good resolution.
