Greetings,

I've traveled international with firearms and ammo, but I leave on Thursday for a domestic flight with a rifle and ammo. I believe you can pack ammo in the rifle case, but can I put some in my suitcase? The rifle case is pushing the max of 50#. Can I just throw 5 boxes of ammo in my suitcase or does it have to be in its own locked container, in the suitcase?

BTW, I'll be leaving Los Angeles, if that makes a difference.

Delta wants them separate. Some in suitcase and none with rifle. At least that is how they want it here, and I have never had a problem like that on hundreds of domestic flights with a gun and ammo.

I just as a general rule now pack my ammo in a separate locked box (TSA locks). So far domestic or foreign everybody has been fine with this.

As per Mark Youngs post, for my USA domestic flights ( all United ) my ammo was in a TSA locked ammo box in my checked luggage. Never had any issue with this.

Check your carrier. TSA says ammo OK with rifle in hard case. United too. Just flew back from a Utah like this. But had both rules printed off just in case.

TSA has rules which the airlines must follow at a minimum , but an airline may put its own further restrictions on baggage. TSA says ammunition packed with gun is okay. Some airlines want it packed in another checked bag (your suitcase is okay). Still others want it in an entirely separate checked & locked case with nothing else in the case. You'll need to look at the website of whatever airline you're flying.

I have flown to numerous locations in Kansas, Montana, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, and other domestic places with my own rifles, shotguns, handguns and ammo, and I ALWAYS separate my ammo and firearms. Ammo goes in a TSA locked container in my checked baggage. Firearms go in my TuffPak. Both the firearms and ammo are declared at check-in and I fly with the usual fully executed firearms declaration card in my TuffPak. I have NEVER had a problem by doing so. Of course, flying to Atlanta and/or Dulles and then on to Africa, the firearms and ammo are checked through but are also packed in the very same way, as when I fly domestic. I have never flown a domestic airline that has required the ammo to be separately packed and checked, although internationally SAA requires that in flying out of Jo'burg to Zim or Namibia, or even in country.

Note wherever you pack it you can't take more than 5kg of ammo, and it has to be in the mfg cartons or a metal box packed in such a way that the rounds are separated. Furthermore, the piece of luggage they are in has to be locked.
