Ammo to South Africa, no gun, can I? How many?

Post title pretty well sums it up. I am strongly considering going to SA in the next couple of weeks for a cull hunt and renting a rifle there. How much ammo, if any, can I carry without an accompanying rifle? Paperwork?

I'd like people that know, not guessers, to reply. Thanks.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

OK, I've dug around on the net and I THINK I can carry 200 rounds but still have to fill out the SAP520 form, etc. Pain in the ass, but that's why I didn't think I'd go back to South Africa again. Never say never.

If anyone thinks this is right or wrong, I'd appreciate your insights.

Did this Sept07...
Filled out SAPS don't forget letter of invitation.Had the oufitter state the need for the specific caliber and amount...

I see your culling, goodluck on bang-flops.Took 42 aninals last year 20 trophies rest culling.More shooting than all the deer hunting I've ever done. But it is shooting not hunting and not any fun if you mess up...

thought all international flights had a 5 kilogram limit for ammo transportation because of Warsaw Convention regs. better check with whatever airline you fly directly. 200 rounds of most calibers will be over the 5 kilo limit.

It might be prudent to check with Hunters Support/Air2000 or one of the other permit services.

I understood that without a rifle you can not bring any ammo at all - even reloading components.

But, I will be happy to be proven wrong.

You're probably right, we just carried 72 and 64 .300WM and .308 (200s and 165s) and they weighed about 10.5 pounds. but I can probaly carry 140 rounds, at least, of .30-06 and if that isn't enough, I'll quit or the baboon population will be sadly depleted.

Gato.. I can tell you what happened a couple of weeks ago concerning your question. I had a hunter renting rifles in Zim so I told him to take ammo for 375 and 30-06(2 boxes each), had letter of invitation, SAPS forms for traveling through SA. Kathi, my travel agent whose word I respect, told me you can't take ammo without a rifle to go with matching calibers. My hunter left his ammo at home because of this regulation.
I took shotgun ammo(although I had no shotgun) and no one said a word, had it listed on my SAPs form. Makes me wonder where the truth lies, did I get lucky with the shotgun ammo and no shotgun???
I would also like to know what is legal????

Since you and I have the same travel agent, Kathi, I'll have to dig a little deeper. I trust her advice, but anyone can be mistaken. FWIW, and I don't consider this to be by any means definitive, the owner of the SA property told me to bring ammo, without a gun, and he'd give me the proper letters. Who knows, but I hope I do before traveling.

You might save yourself a lot of hassle and just buy the ammo there.

That is what I would do if I wasn't taking my own rifles.

Saeed:

I thought about that, but as I read the regulations, you have to have a permit to buy ammo in SA. I'm not sure if the Phs/whatever are limited or not but I'm going to check into it further.

RSA (temporary) Firearm import regs say you cannot take ammo into RSA if you don't also have a firearm of the same calibre with you. If you're hiring a firearm, why not just buy the ammo from whoever is supplying the firearm?

Roll EyesI am very interested also since my ph asked that I bring some bullets to Namibia for him. We are leaving Sunday. By the way I am not taking either guns or loaded ammo, only the Woodleigh bullets.

Unless I was overnighting in South Africa, I would have no hesitation about carrying reloading bullets to Namibia. The atmosphere is friendly and you will not be searched, that is assuming it is illegal, which I am not sure of.

killpcGato, unforutnately I have to overnight due to SAA changing flight times, I cannot make the connection as I had in the past. I will be at the Afton house Aug 11 and on to Namibia on the 12th. I have a call into Doug @ Gracey travel waiting for a return call right now. I don't want any part of South African grey stone hospitality.

killpc Gato, I just got off the phone with Doug and he stated the same inof, that if a person did not have a friearm in the caliber that there could be big problems and he strongly recommend to me not to do it. I hate to dissappoint my PH but I hate taking unnecessary chances that far from home. I will try to find someone going to Namibia that might take the bullets along for me. Three boxes of 9.3 Woodleigh bullets need a ride to Nothern Namibia Otavia area. Any body visiting this year?
