Is it best to get one before you fly?
If so have you used a service or not?

Not sure about Tanzania, but I’m going to Kenya in April/May and my passport in at the Kenya Embassy as I type this getting a visa. I was advised to get the visa ahead of time (Kenya single entry visas must be used within 90 days) and not rely one evisa or visa on arrival. But of course your timing may be different and not allow the turnaround. I’d rather have it in hand.

You can get one when you arrive, but G3 can get you one in advance and all they charge is $99 for standard processing.

When I flew into Kili (Arusha) in October, I had my bags claimed and guns cleared before the first photo tourist got an on-site visa.

Well worth it.

Last year we got our Visas ahead of time and glad we did. Long wait at customs in DAR if you wait to get one when you arrive. We've used G3 also.

It is always best to get your visa in advance.

Especially if you are arriving in the afternoon and flying straight out to camp.

Delays can cause you not to fly out that evening, and spend the night in Dar.

Something I would rather avoid.

What I find rather strange with African countries is this.

Our Ministry of Foreign affairs issues a list of VISA FREE travel countries that we can travel to without getting a visa in advance.

Every country on the list, except those in Africa, we just pass through immigration without requiring a visa.

But not African countries.

To them, it means one can get a visa on entry.

Very strange.

Just as a follow-up: I received today my Kenya visa. Total time to process was 10 days from date of mailing. Easy peasy... cost was $65 including shipping.

It is best to have your Visa in hand before landing, it make it way easier to get through customs.

When you use a service to obtain your visa, (I used Gracy Travel) that you may need additional Passport photos. I know that is the only country that I needed 6 passport photos for the various visa and permits that were needed.

Have always used G3. They are great. Two choices, you can go straight to the head of the line in either Arusha or Dar, or you can wait with the masses while they fill out their visa applications with little golf course pencils. Bear in mind it's pretty late at night. Earlier in Arusha, but you've still got to clear firearms and you're an hour from your hotel once that's done. Later in Dar. No choice at all.
